On road tyres, but you ought to see how much circumference lost on a good pair of off road type tyres.

When a tachograph on a HGV is calibrated , they do factor in a correction for tread depth.

We\'re driving slower than necessary!

All my last three cars have, on careful measurement, had the speedo reading too high by between 8 and 9 per cent, throughout the range 30 - 70 mph. (The legal maximum error is 10%). At the same time the odometer has been spot on, so it isn't an accidental fault.

It's in everyone's interest. The manufacturers appear to produce faster cars, motorists like the seeming extra power, yet we're more likely to keep within the speed limit.

GPS blows the gaffe on this practice.
