Looking to replace our dated furuno 1721 CRT radar, I would like to remove the CRT display from the dash & replace it with an LCD display.
Will I need to replace the 2Kw Radome & buy a complete new system or will the radome be compatible with newer LCD displays?

Tried looking for info on the web but not turned anything up, anyone know if it's possible to reuse the radome?

For your specific model I don't know, but I have a Furuno myself and looked into an upgrade once. In that case the radome needed to be replaced.
In short. I think the chances of being able to retain your radome are next to nothing. It's not in the interest of Furuno to make this a viable option.

Cheers,

Arno

Definitely need to replace the entire thing (I am a furuno dealer) 1721 are circa 1989 and were superceeded a couple of times to get to the current 1623/1715 LCD models.

Besides which, you want to keep the bit (scanner) that does the work, lives in the weather and will be the most worn out (magnetron & motor). so a new display is highly unlikely to get you a better picture (returns) and will invalidate the warranty.

Also, and probably the critical point, you cannot just buy a new LCD display.

Thanks Geoff, just the info I needed.

It still works quite well but the location of the CRT screen is not the best, only way of improving the useability is to move it closer to the helm, something I have no space for.

New setup it is then.
Cheers
