Furuno Radar 1831

Hi I have an elderly 1831 which until recently has given sterling service but now although the scanner rotates and the screen has normal display the screen arm doesn't 'sweep' . Iv contacted the local Furuno guys who were next to useless . apparently they are not to ascend masts due to H&S and suggested I get a riggers to checkout the scanner !! WTF ??. To establish whether the scanner was rotating he sent his lad to put his ear to the mast and listen !
Anyway Iv had the dome off and the scanner rotating and all the plugs are connected and no damp/ wet present . Iv checked all the conns at the mast base and all look secure . Are there any electronic wizards out there that can shed some light what's wrong ??

You could climb the mast your self...
I know that riggers have to pay a much more expensive insurance fee for the employees who climb masts, there are also special requirements for training of the climber and his/hers security (ground) crew.
I might explain why the local Furuno guys suggested paying for a rigger to climb..

I did ...... That how I know it's dry and rotating . I doubt if a rigger is technically knowledgable to determin whether a scanner is transmitting or not . He could probably do no more than my basic 'gander' which isn't not I wanted.
I would have thought that a radar tetchy would have the necessary training and insurance to climb a mast since half their equipment is up there . Anyway I don't want this thread to drift into riggers verses radar engineers I need techy advice.

Hi clyst

I had a similar problem with my elderly Furuno

I took the dome cover off to discover the ( dont know the name of these bits )
virtical metal back plate had come askew, due to one of the holding screws had fallen off.

Easy to fix,
well mine was cos my Radar dome is on a Gantry
