Furuno instruments - any users

I have used their gps, ais and radar units and have found them to be excellent. Well worth the money if you can afford it.

Use Furuno almost exclusively.
Radar, plotter, navtex, SSB - all Furuno.

It may not look as fancy and colourful as the competition, nor will it boast the latest bells and whistles, but it works - always without fail.
And for Furuno waterproof does mean waterproof.

I don't know what their after sales service is like, no Furuno kit I have owned has ever broken down.

When I first started out in this sailing lark I once asked an experienced yottie (2 circumnavigations) for advice. He said: 'Get whatever professional fishermen buy. If it doesn't work, for a yottie - at most - he loses a day sailing. If it doesn't work, a fisherman's not making any money'.

Have a look round - professionals tend to use Furuno.

So do I, and I haven't regretted it once.

I've used a GP31 for years - reliable, well designed, well built piece of kit.

Last winter, I replaced my old & troublesome NASA instruments with NMEA 2000 kit. I went for Garmin GMI10, but couldn't get a wind instrument, so I fitted Furuno FI50.

Excellent piece of kit. I'm very impressed by it. A great improvement on the unreliable NASA toy.

Can't afford to buy it now, but when I was commercially fishing you didn't buy anything else but Furuno.
Furuno is the Rolls Royce of boat electronics closely followed by Kelvin Hughes, either of these would do your needs and shouldn't ever let you down.

After sales service would depend on who fitted it for you - we always used Tim at Dyfed Electronics and they were great and affordable. I've since used Tim on my boat and again never been let down.

Have on board GPS32 (x years old), 1623 radar (2 years old) and a navtex purchased at SIBS this year. All do what they say on the box as well being plug and go. Old nasa navtex hardly picked up any thing but the furuno picks up the lot. Will have to spend time selecting correct stations and the various safety bits Only problem with the navtex though is when swapping frequency you have to reselect stations, etc unless someone can tell me differently !

Have their dual frequency NAVTEX a very piece of kit, spotted their GPS on the bridge of a RN Frigate so there must be something going for it.

Got a Furuno Navnet Radar/Chartplotter, which is an excellent piece of equipment, solidly built and probably designed, like many of their products, for a hard life on small fishing vessels.

As other have said, take a look around any fishing harbour - Furuno rules!

I use the GPS and Navtex sets, interfaced into Raymarine. When the Raymarine stuff finally self destructs or when I decide to refit, I'd seriously consider using their gear. Expensive though, but seems worth it.

Use Furuno GP32, Repeater RD30 interfaced with Yeoman together with Navtex NX300D. All seem very well built kit and functional. Have limited recent experience of other makes but to date am delighted with Furuno gear. NX 300 has been a great purchase, on several occasions being our only source of weather data.

Furuno repairs

John

My Navtex was affected by an electrical Storm. This resulted in no NMEA input. Sent back to Furuno who have asked for £83 for testing only to tell me that as they do carry spares for this unit it cannot be repaired - and I should buy a new one!! This I find amazing on a unit they still make. They say the cost of putting a new circuit board into the unit would cost more than a replacement!! I also found Furuno UK particularly unhelpful. Anyone else had a similar experience??

Furuno

I have Navtex/radar/gps and they are all great, any replacements i do in future of the rest of my gear it will be with Furuno.

I have never had to deal with them repair wise as I have never had a unit fail. Lightning strike is a different matter though. Can't you claim on your insurance?
It may be as well, that all lightning strike items should probably be discarded.

Anyway you're a well known bloody cheapskate.....just kidding:D

Cheers from Florida:cool:
