Hi

I have a GP32 and from what you describe it sounds as if something fundamental is wrong, as they pretty much come to life straight out of the box (I take it you have just installed it?).

For starters, and at risk of giving lessons on sucking eggs - are you sure the antenna cable is ok and has not suffered any damage perhaps hidden from view? Also could the unit have been dropped (unbeknown to you?).

Thank for the reply. The antenna unit is fine although the thought has come to me that the rail mount I fitted ends up with the plastic hand tighter uptight next to the beacon but really cant see how that would effect it. The strange thing is even when I disconnect the cable from the back of the unit the messages setting still is blank and does not inform me that there is “no receiver status” as it states in the bible. I think this one could be a warranty job. I didn’t realize it was not working till I got out to sea and tried to track my ground and noted there was no SOG while in the marina it showed long/lat so its kind of a strange one I think.

When you are at your usual mooring point and power the unit up, it will display the last lat / lon that is held in its back-up memory - it does this to give a faster warm up without the user having to wait a few minutes each time to get an initial fix.

Obviously under normal conditions, if you move the unit a few miles and then power it up that all goes out the window, and the unit has to start from scratch.

Anyway, this 'quick start' feature might explain why the unit looked fine when you were at the dock, but when underway it became obvious that the unit wasn't updating itself. IMO that doesn't help us eliminate either the antenna /cable /connections or the unit itself. In simple terms the unit is either trying to receive but not getting anything from the antenna or isn't able to recieve because of an internal fault.

Do you know of anybody else with a the same unit you could swap with - or even a local Furuno dealer who could lend you one to try? That should instantly tell you that the antenna / cable is ok and that the unit is duff or vice versa! Let us know what you find.

Recently fitted a gps32 due to Valsat failure which now has no service back-up. Very pleased with its simplicity of operation but have two problems. First is severe interference on car radio fed off same battery on FM and LW so have to shut the gps off to hear forecasts. Second is transfer of waypoint to Raymarine radar. COG is transmitted but no waypoint, whereas both worked with the Valsat.
Any ideas?

Had exactly the same problem on my Furuno. Then found that I had inadvertently cut the antenna lead (don't ask!). Once the antenna lead was repaired with a decent connector (I know that the manual tells you not to break the lead but I had no choice) the unit works fine. I would check the antenna lead very carefully or suspect the antenna itself.
