My faithful 10 year old GPS is dying, the screen is going and having purchased a replacement GP32 GPS, I would like to be able to transfer the 400 odd waypoints from the old GPS to the new one.

I have 2 PC I could use, 1 with Window Starter, the other with Windows 8

The Manual is not particularly helpful. It talks about a cable with a 9 or 25 pin DSUB connector on it and attaching this to a PC and then proceed to upload/download the routes and waypoints.

I asked at the Furuno stand at SIBS and could not get an answer.

Has anyone actually managed to do this? If so, can you give me some clues on how to proceed?

i.e.

What PC software was used to talk to the Furuno?

How was the Furuno attached to the PC?

Any other things to watch out for

Thanks in advance

I've done this a good while ago. Subject to memory, you need to connect the Furuno power/data cable to a D-sub9 connector, and then to a serial port on the PC. Unless the PC is ancient, you will need a USB/serial converter.
Soldering to a D connector is a fairly delicate task, but ready made might be available.
D-sub pin connections for the PC are:- yellow (rec)-2; green (send)-3; blue (ground)-5.
I transferred using the application Ozi-explorer, but, I think, the GP32 software will do the job.

Thanks Moody Sabre and Earlybird for your responses

I thought I would close this query off with the solution to this problem that was given to me by Matt Paulin of Neptunes Gear, http://www.neptunes-gear.com/, thanks Matt

Very simple as it does not need a PC and I could not get my hands on a serial plug in my neck of the woods

Matt’s solution

You should be able to connect the DATA OUT from the old GP32 to the new one’s DATA in.

Set the old one’s menu to send to PC,

Set the new one to receive from PC,

Press go on the old one!

That there is no PC, it does not matter – they both will speak NMEA – to each other in this case.

Twisting the wires together is fine for this temporary requirement!!

So the actual wiring was as follows

On the old GPS which I wanted send data from I used the Yellow wire which is connected to the Green wire on the new GPS which I wanted to send data to

The bare wires can be connected together and to batt negative, they are shield ground.

Should not be essential for what you are doing, provided both gps units are powered from same battery.

400 waypoints and 20 routes took less than 3 minutes to transfer,

Note,

Any existing data on the GPS that is being transferred to is lost!
