further smelly fuel pipe probs

Thanks to all of you for your valuable advice.
Unfortunately, 'Old 'un', the tank sits in a section of the hull with bulkheads immediately in front and behind the tank - further there's no drain hole in this bit..and the tank fits this space with only 1/2 cm all round...no way of getting underneath tank without removing and that is MAJOR.
Also, this tank space is underneath aft berth..so even if I could get it out, I couldn't remove it from the berth entrance..plus I can't remove the hose due to the fountain of fuel spurting out!
Would running the engine relieve the pressure?? (there is a sealed bulkhead between engine and tank)
Thanks again to you all....it really is appreciated!

If you want to relieve the pressure why don't you just unscrew the filler cap ?

Stuff stored in tanks underground tends to come out of them at 14'C, I imagine that you brimmed the tank and the fuel is now expanding as it starts to warm up. if the breather is blocked and the fuel starts to expands it has to have some where to go. This could be why you have the smell of petrol in the first place coz it may well have forced it's way past a hose clip. So perhaps you should be a bit carefull when you unscrew the petrol filler cap. All IMHO of course.

HI,
I,am not familier with your boat but could it be that youv,e "overfilled" tank when in garage and now fuel expanding??.Try taking some fuel out from the engine conection into a container or pump the lot out and start agin.If this is a load of guff and youv,e already thought of this at least i tried!!!.ffuel smell should evaporate once spilled dries up,if two stoke... told you wasn,t familier water and washing up liquid did the trick when outboard leaked in my car
best of kuck

Yes, tank is entirely separated by closed bulkhead..plus it's 1meter away from engine. When you lift engine cover, no petrol niff from the engine at all (Volvo AQ211A V8)

Yes, I think I over filled it at garage...only £15 went in (Volvo AQ211A V8) then fille nozzle clicked. I assumed that it was because the filler hose was pointing upwards, as I could only just reach filler cap! However fuel gauge registered 1/2 full, so the gauge may well be faulty, as the tank 'sounds very full when you tap it.
If it is full, it would explain the fountain of petrol out of the breather connection.
I think I'm going to put in water and run engine for a few days to lower the fuel level...see what happens...well ventilated of course..ie engine cover up (although fuel tank is nowhere near engine and is separated by a water tight bulkhead.
Thanks for your help!
Max ;-)

For what its worth and in my humble opinion I would NOT run the thing with petrol smells. No way.

Much better to take fuel out to lower the level - use a piece of pipe and syphon it out. You could also use the pipe as a dipstick - see how far it goes in before it gets "wets" that may give you an indication as to how much fuel is in the tank.

The tank probably holds about 50 gallons. If you need somewhere to store it - fill the wifes car up with what you take out :)))).

Take Care.
