Furling Line

This came up a few years ago here. One problem was the 'flaps' inside the drum trapping the rope so the sail couldn't be furled in. I removed this item and since then my furling line has behaved itself. If I manage to find a picture of the offending item I will post it.

The fitting is riveted to the drum and the line kept getting caught on the underside.

I have a 49ft yacht. The rigging list says to use 12mm braid on braid with core removed. This is for a big genoa whereas I have a smaller yankee since I am cutter rigged. I have braid on braid with the core still in. It never jams but it does take a lot of effort to furl by hand. Will taking the core out help?
How much core should I remove from my 25m of furling line? Or should I just downsize to 10mm?

Furl the sail and mark the line about 6 feet in front of the jammer. Remove the core there, remembering to taper ~ 6" and lockstitch. It will furl smoother, and you will still have fat enough line for your hands and the jammer. I suppose you could do this without removing the line, by extracting and tapering near the drum, if removal is difficult.

BTW, you do NOT push to cover up, you pull the core out the side with a fid or knitting needle.
