Hi,

Sunrunner has a Profurl furler like the one in the pic (which is not of my boat). I intend to change the furling line and it will be proportionately thinner than the one in the pic so I need to know what is the best knot to use to retain the furling line in the furler ?

Thanks,

Boo2

Figure of eight knot?

A double overhand knot will be better than a figure of eight. It also looks neat.

A monkeys fist will make a very large ball. Too large probably unless you are planning on a furling line of 6mm or less .

I cannot get an Ashley stopper knot to look right.

It's dead easy to make variations on standard knots to make them work better in certain circumstances. For example, a standard fig 8 in my jib sheets will come undone just at the wrong time, just because it's kicking around on the cockpit floor and will loosen, so I "add" a turn to the fig 8 to take it though the final loop twice. I also leave a longer tail. You could also go for a shortened blood knot (think hangman's noose without the loop)

In the past I had 600 stopper knots attaching my pots to the backline. I use a figure of eight with the end passed through twice, it's neat and can be undone even after tons of strain.
edit: as in #7.

That's called a Double Figure of Eight, and was going to be my suggestion.

The knot is called in his own diagram "Ashley's Stopper" How can he have copyright over something that's apparently copied from another publication eg "Ashley's Book of Knots"?

He should be grateful for the publicity he's getting.

I think you will find that he is claiming copyright for the illustration/animation, not for the knot itself.

Don't want to pursue this too far, but if he copied it from another book, how does that give him copyright?

As Alan d says he is claiming copyright of the artwork which presumably appeared in the post in question

What seems crazy is that a link to the same image is acceptable......... just one click difference.
