furlex problem

My furlex system drum occassionaly seems to turn and leave the furling line wrapped around the underside resulting in having to physically turn the drum by hand to free the turn. Is this common or is it a fault. I am usually solo when sailing and therefore cannot view whats happening whilst in the cockpit. Should the drum turn at all. thanks.

I think you need to keep a little tension on the line when you are un-furling the sail, so that it winds round the drum in an orderly manner.

I don't know what model of furlex you have but the outside part shouldn't turn but just the drum inside. Look at the manual diagram - perhaps something has come loose.

Although lack of tension is probably the problem, it can sometimes cause difficulties if the lead to the drum is not aligned well, even resulting in a snarl-up outside the drum.

That was a test for you at Shotley, honest (he lied)! I can turn the drum by hand although it is rather stiff. It is a nuisance especially when bouncing around. perhaps its due to leaving the furling line with no tension, makes sense.

Try greasing the drum bearing; I can't remember the exact procedure but it involves taking the half shells apart and the Selden grease applied with a small plastic hypodermic needle. Makes a big difference.

There is a star key retaining screw under the drum. When this comes loose the drum/cover gets play in it and allows the line to get jammed in the gap.

Quite right, that fastening needs to be as tight as possible
