My boat came with a Selden 200S Furlex which is getting on for 20 years old. The problem I have with it is that no matter how much I tighten up the torque screw that prevents the drum from turning, it still happens when I try to unfurl the jib. Has anyone else had the same problem and is it fixable?

Do you mean the line guard is turning? The drum has to turn to unfurl the jib.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean. The line guard turns and the furling line wraps around the foot of the jib.

OK, the line guard clamps on to the stationary bottom bit of the furler. If it's not clamping properly, you need to take it apart and look for damage or missing bits. As I recall, there's a little metal plate in the locking block, which the screw bears on to. Has this gone walkabout?

My furlex 200 used to get issues of the line getting jammed between the bottom of the drum and the line guard, this then tried to pull the assembly round the forestay. Is this the issue with yours? After years of suffering this occasional problem I consulted a rigger who gave the unofficial advice that people often remove the springy part oh the line guard altogrther. I did this and have not had a problem since. Look at the Selden manual on this link and I am referring to item 18 on the exploded view diagram. Download the pdf. furlex 200 manual - Google Search

A couple of years ago or maybe more, there was a thread on here about that springy part. I ended up removing mine by drilling out the 2 rivets. Had no jams since unless I let the jib out to quickly which then causes the furling line not to coil well on the drum.

I've just taken mine apart. PVB is correct. There is a long torx head bolt which is used to fix the orientation of the drum to centre the line in the line feeder. You can't see it easily but if loose - or worse, missing - then the drum will rotate as you have found.

To help others who come across this thread, if your line guard is spinning when the sail is pulled out, it means the ‘locking block’ is upside down (see Furlex diagram) - the slot in the locking block must be on top.

My 200 would wrap furling line round spar above drum at times with the full genoa. It was basically because the drum was full and line had nowhere to go ...
I removed turns from drum when sail was furled ... test ... remove another turn ... test etc.

I have two sails I use on the 200 ... a Self tacker which is smaller than the full which is the other. The self tacker is fine but the full genoa needs those turns sorted.
