How do I...

..get the swage, and the drum, off the end of a forestay? I guess the swage just needs easing oil and force, but the swivelly bit which guides the furling line to the drum seems to be threaded into the centre of the drum, with nowhere to fix a spanner.

It's a 'Bulldog', quite small, but needs to come off cos I need a new forestay.

..you'll have to click the link because I can't make a photo magically appear on this page!!

it looks as though you have a STA-LOK, in which case you could indeed force the swage down and remove the cone within, alternatively, just cut the forestay and slide through the furler. Having removed a well made STA-LOK swage myself, you may find that the swage will be slightly battered afterwards. If you do manage to take it off thoguh, you must obtain a new cone for it and not use the old one. I would opt for cutting and purchasing a new STA-LOK.

You shouldn't need to remove the drum from the foil. having removed the Sta-Lok terminal ( easiest just to cut through the old forestay above the terminal and dismantle the terminal in a vice) then withdraw the forestay through the foil.

Cut the old forestay to get it off, thread the new forestay through and make it up using a norseman type terminal. It looks as though it was a Norseman or Stalock type fitted previously, so you might just get away with using the old fitting with a new swage. IMHO its not worth using old swages, theres too much to lose if it goes wrong. A good example of spoiling the ship for a haporth of tar!

If it has been made up using Loctite thread sealer then you will not shift it without damage.

Hi there, Sorry can't help with your problem but..
Nice looking boat, suggest you put the photo in a separate file unless you are really trying to sell it, because all the other photo's are accessable as well. If so Where is it and how much ? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If you have to replace the forestay, I am assuming that you will also replace the fittings on either end. If that is the case then why not cut the old forestay.

As Others have said just cut off the Sta-lok teminal and replace the cone when you come to put it back onto the new forestay. A work of caution however. If your furling gear is anything like my Facnor gear then you MUST send a mouse through as you withdraw the old forestay because when the foil is assembled small plastic spacers are put in at each stage and it is impossible to get the new forestay through without a mouse. I had to drill out all the rivets and reassemble which was a pain in the ~~~~%%%%.

Once I saved such a situation by using a vacuum cleaner to suck a thin thread(?) throug a dinghy mast. Just tied a knot with some short loops in de end so it caught the air and the vacuum cleaner sucked it right through.
Maybe next time,
Theo.

Just bought it last year, so not for sale! It is now a totally bare shell, all sanded down waiting for paint & varnish. Hope to be in the water in time for the Festival of the Sea.

Ok so the swage just gets the brute force /vice.

What about the drum though? I don't want to take it off the foil, I just want to get the forestay out. It seems to be fixed to the drum. Is this another case of vice, hammer & pull or is it fixed on?

As a thought does the foil detatch from the drum to expose a nut on the inside of the drum. Perhaps cutting the top swage off the forestay and removing it from the bottom may help in the matter. Looking at the different metels involved don't be too surprised if corrosion make disassembly difficult.
