What could cause the petrol fume detector to keep setting off the alarm other than a fuel leak?
The broker has replaced the detector but to no avail. He said that we would have to buy it as it is due to him not being able to find the fault.

Is it a fume detector or a CO monitor? I have a CO monitor in my sports cruiser which occasionally beeps when pootling along slowly with the canopy on but open at the stern. This is because the monitor is detecting high CO in the exhaust fumes which sometimes waft in. (There have been incidents in the U.S. of boaters actually passing out whilst travelling at displacement speeds for long periods because of this 'drawing in' effect).

What do you mean by, '...He said that we would have to buy it as it is due to him not being able to find the fault...' ?

Definitely the petrol fume alarm. It went off as soon as ignition key was turned on.
The boat is the brokers own boat sale and is selling it with a warranty and with some known faults.

You don't say what the "petrol fume detector" is but my guess is that it will be some form of flammable gas detector.

If that is so then LPG, hydrogen from the batteries, decaying matter in the bilges, or excessive flatulence of the crew could all set it off.

Also some gas detectors seem to sound for a couple minutes when first switched on.

Is it a single unit, or is it a remote sensor with seperate control / alarm box?

Was the previous unit removed from the boat and tested? Who's decision was it to replace the existing one, who diagnosed it as faulty?

What exactly does the new one detect?
