I don't have one of these and I guess it's important! However, I have a Bukh DV10 (single cyliner 10hp) and they advise not having a filter in line before the pump as a blocked filter would put 'massive strain' on the pump. After the pump is OK apparently. What would you advise? Getting separator's without filters is almost impossible, most people have never heard of them!

P.S. thanks for all the advice of the mainsail - have decided to order a new one with the mods mentioned in the replies.

You used to be able to geta sedimentor this just a glass bowl, you let the fuel enter the casting and the sudden change in velocity as it entered the glass bowl would cause heavy particles and water to drop out and stay in the glass bowl this contained no filter and would do what you need and because no filter not much extra suction on pump, where can you get one I dunno.

Alternatively why cant you put filter after the pump, what your manual is saying is a filter between tank and pump is out because when the filter blocks the extra suction at the pump will cause it to be damaged, therefore as you say why not put the filter after the pump you will get more filter life out of it anyway.

ASAP Supplies...

You can get a straightforward water separator from ASAP Supplies - probably best to phone them because their website is impenetrably complicated! But you'd be better off getting a combined primary filter and water separator (ASAP's product code 302003).

I've never heard of an engine manufacturer warning against fitting a primary filter - they're standard equipment on most boats. It's true that a blocked filter will put more strain on the pump, but in my experience the engine will stop before the pump gets damaged.

Simon,

I have an aglomorator without filter in my garage going spare. I replaced it with the version with the course filter. You are welcome to it if you want it. Be aware that it has a plastic bowl and so shouldn't be fitted in the engine compartment because of fire.

Though I also can't see why a primary filter would cause a problem.

Rob.
