Just completed RYA questionaire and entered 12,000 litres per annum, came up with "must be between 1,000 & 10,000". Now, my very basic maths runs to "I fill up approx once a month, at 1000 litres a time = 12000 litres"??

Then thought perhaps I've got it wrong, so looked on Volvo site for TAMD74L with EDC and sure enough at my usual cruising speed, 2100 revs, it shows 55 litres per hour per engine. Thus 198 hours x 55litres x 2 Engines = 21780 litres! I know 198 is correct 'cos she was new 15.2.03 and shows 198hrs last night when I left her. Obviously not cruising all the time so accept 21780 is probably way high but it has got to be at least 12,000. Have to say £3500 looks about right for fuel costs last year too, which at 28p per litre = 12,500 litres.

So is it just me? Is my ebersbacher using absolutely fountains of fuel, or am I overusing the boat, in comparison to a lot of other people out there?? If I am she is truly living up to her name, "Damn the Expense" and worth every penny!!!

"Over-using the boat" - now there's a contradiction in terms............

Your sums make sense to me, but I suspect the concept of somebody using this amount of fuel is an enigma to the, ahem, slightly sail-orientated chaps and chapesses at the RYA and therefore that it was not factored into the briefing for whoever put together the questionnaire.

Having said which, you are plainly failing to adhere to the appropriate guidelines for the suitable use of a leisure craft, Sub-section 21(b) clause 11: "Exercising self discipline when opening the throttles" or some such nonsense. Accordingly, you are now prohibited from messing about at sea, and sentenced to 10 years touring the UK canal network in a narrow boat.

You won't need "Damn the Expense" for this, so I will look after her for you. A few bob towards fuel costs would be appreciated /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Paul,

thanks for asking, boating is going great. Just been dissappointed with the weather the last 2 weekends, I have not been able to get out. Finished day skipper course 3 weeks ago so obviously keen to start building experience. Will be down on the boat next week for a week as it is half term for the kids, hope we get some good weather then.

Rob
