Fuel transfer pump recommendations?

I need a reliable fuel pump to get diesel from the main tank in the keel into a day tank under the cockpit , any recommendations or what to steer clear of?

Thinking of something like this..

36" prime height should just get away with it.


Any ideas?

Those little Facet pumps seem quite highly regarded. Could you mount the pump lower to avoid the prime height? Or is the keel tank 36" deep?

Ta. What I was hoping to hear.

Tank is 30" deep so hopefully will just be OK priming.

It would only be a problem when the keel tank's nearly empty though.

Have you looked into detail of the mechanism? The description in the link is somewhat guarded but 'no bearings, no diaphragms, solid state' is intriguing.

I was wondering the same thing.. Google came up with this:

It's a solenoid-type pump. A little piston is shuttled backwards and forwards by an electromagnetic coil.

Thanks to you and GHA. We were discussing it over breakfast and I had guessed that this might be the mechanism. Not a type that features very much in the hydrocarbons industry!

Interestingly the seller states that the pump must not be used with flammable liquids but then goes on to say that it can be used to pump gasoline!

and describes formaldehyde as one of the flammable liquids. Formaldehyde is a gas at NTP, mostly used dissolved in water.

The pump of your enquiry and others of this type are in my opion superior to the modern replacement for the old Lucas type 3 burnt out so bought one from a Kabuto dealer, now in its 4th year of cont, use for main engine 50hp BMC

I have one if these in my filtration rig. Has served me very well for about six years, presently it gets about 4 hours use per month recirculating the tanks.

I Have a Facet in Naida supplying Betamarine engine from tank low down in keel. It has worked faultlessly for 350 engine hours. Only disadvantage I can see is that in salt environment the casing will rust treated it with AC50

I've got a similar pump to the one above. I never installed it - it was going to pump fuel up to a diesel heater. It's unmarked, so I don't know who made it, but its unused and has some brief instructions with it.

I was going to chuck it (trying to stop accumulating stuff) but if anyone wants it, PM me. Comes with connector fittings.

Jabsco do flam liquid rotary vain pumps in 12v & 24v. Several sizes available and they can transfer about 500 litres in ten minutes with very little battery drain. I fitted them to my old tug when the 240v dc pump packed in as the repair cost was ridiculous. I ran it off a leisure battery and I reckon if the tug was working a few hours every day and I pumped 500 litres a day the battery lasted about three weeks between charges? Just needed a a switch as there is a car blade fuse in the pump end cap.
Personally I think those little solenoid pumps are a bit slow (36 gallons per hour). For a transfer pump you want the means to move bulk fuel easily and fairly quickly. Jabsco pumps are also servicable.
