Hi,

I have just investigated by looking inside my petrol tank and wandered what is likely to be maximum. The tank itself has a centre baffle which finsed about 2.5 inches below the top of the tank. Would this be the maximum or could I fill the tank up to the top. Also could someone confirm that to work out the amount of lires in the tank I work with 61.02 cu inches per lire of fuel.

no reason why you shouldnt go above the interior baffles. The main reason they are there is to stop the fuel slopping around when the tank is not full. If you want to work out the capacity why dont you work in Cm as the conversion cc to litres is so easy, even I can do it!!

With a petrol tank on a point of safety leave a safe ullage for expansion. I would only fill to 95% of the tank capacity. I would expect if you buy a 5 gallon petrol tank then it would hold 5 gallons of petrol and the tank manufacturer would allow for a safe ullage.
On the point of your calculation my copy of Macmillan says 1 cu ft is 28.33 litres and as 1 cu ft is 1728 cubic in then 1728/28.33 = 61 litres

With diesel which is vented I soon found it was not a good idea to fill the tank on layup as recommended by many to stop condensation. When I did this an air pocket in the tank warmed up in the spring and pumped 1 gallon down the side of the hull via the vent. This left a stain on the hull which took several years to go.
So I found to my cost never to fill on layup past the vent level.

Probably the baffle is a 'surge-baffle' and there really shouldn't be any reason that you cannot fill the tank right up. Only thing that I would be aware of is expansion of the fuel with increase in temp..... but again that would be only small.

A litre is equivelent to 10cmx10cmx10cm, so if your Cubic Capacity in cubic centimeters is 208376 then your tank(s) will hold 2083 litres.
