I have just removed the lid of my diesel fuel tank for cleaning. The cork gasket (2mmthick) is damaged & needs replacing. Can I use any cork sheet or does it have to be some specific gasket-suitable cork? Or would it be better to make a new gasket from nitrile rubber?

Thanks in anticipation

Dave

The gasket needs to be diesel proof, to protect against seepage during rough seas. Nitrile rubber is fine, as is a lot of other gasket materials. Some rubbers use oil in their processing, and hence become sticky as "floppy" as result... definite no go
In my experience the best place to get smallish sized gasket sheets is an engineers merchant, who know what materials to use with what.
Failing that, Ebay has plenty of nitrile and cork suppliers
