Just taken out our fuel tank to give it a good clean, paint up etc.

I have disturbed the suction pipe and now need to tighten up the thread again. The fittings appear to be sealed with some orange stuff - is this a particular type of diesel-resistant loctite, or what should I use?

And while we are on the subject - the rubber gasket that seals the inspection plate in place is not brand new any more. If I make a new one what material should it be made with and should the screws that screw it down be gunged in place with something?

As usual, thanks in advance for all the advice . . . I feel I am asking too much and not putting enough back at the moment, but what goes aroujnd comes around . . .

As for your rubber inspection hatch gasket you can use rubber

Not natural rubber as that will be attacked by the diesel. Neoprene is probably suitable.

Neoprene is fine for the gasket (and as Vic has pointed out, careful of other rubbers as they will break down with diesel) and an alternative to Loctite is Hylomar Blue thread sealant for the screw in fittings and hatch cover screws (it also works between hoseclipped hosetails and flexible tubing with fuel in them and a weeping problem).

For your gaskets, Neoprene will be OK for a while if its a diesel tank, but you really ought to use Nitrile.

If unleaded petrol then Viton is generally best [various additives in unleaded can attack even nitrile in the longer term.]

I asked similar qu. quite a while ago, Nick. Lots of resposes but knowledgable recc. was blue hylomar for thread sealing.

I agree, nitrile has greater resistance and is the better material (although neoprenes include nitrile in the blend).

In either case it is wise to specify the use when purhasing.
