ok our new Nanni 21 runs sweet as a nut for hours on end and then, usually at the worst time possible, abruptly cuts out. We have disassembled, assembled, cleaned and shouted at the fuel filter, lines and valves but still it dies for no apparent reason. We have wondered if gunk is getting in from the tank so are mulling over replacing the fuel tank. However the current tank is glassed into the hull and wont be easily removed. So my question is if we add another tanks and theres plenty of room, will it work as it will be lower down in the hull ie a lower pressure through the pipe. Would an extra fuel pump be required?

Surfing in at 10 knots, sails up, across the Bar into Wells with a faltering engine was just a bit too exciting this week...

If you've checked everything else, logically your problem could be in the tank. As Bobobolinsky said, you could clean the tank - much easier and cheaper than replacing it. However, as an interim measure, check whether your tank pick-up pipe has a filter on the end. This is the case with many original Volvo set-ups. The filter is a fine mesh tubular thing, buried right at the bottom of the tank, and it can get clogged with crud.

Dirty tank no acces for cleaning

Fuel tank air vent blocked?

Shouldn't matter as the engine recirculates the fuel more likely crud in tank and rust from suppliers tank etc carried over when filling - if you can use a large bore extraction pipe in top access panel circulate through a separate filter reentering tank at far end - ASAP does a kit for this - I have a spare CAV fliter and have bought some pipe from them and an electric fuel pump and am going to try it out this season
