Fuel Stabiliser?

Our Colonial cousind from across da pond in the wonderful land of Bayliner, reccommend an additive for petrol tanks during lay-up periods, they call it "Fuel Stabiliser" what is it? what does it do? is it available here? how much do you use? and is it worth bothering with!?

Drain it and put it in the car, doesn't get anymore stable.

Yes it is available in this country. It is used widely by classic car owners.

I guess if you get hold of a popular classic car magazine there will be adverts for the stuff.

Motor bike owners are also known to use it.

You may even be able to get it from Halfords.

Quicksilver sell one, I have used it, can't say if it is any good but the boat worked fine after the winter break.

It is used to help retain the fuels ability to combust, which diminishes over time. It is also said to avoid the gumming up effect of petrol left in carbs etc. Don't know if any of this is true but I do use it myself. Quicksilver do one as do JRP Distribution. See MBM Oct issue pg 83.

I have used it in Power tools (chain saw ,grinder and hedge trimmers) all 2 stroke and after a long winters inactivity, they started first or second pull. I got mine from a mower shop but I am sure that it is available from other "vehicular sauces".

I've used FuelSet.Its worked ok and the petrol has lasted the winter. If you do use these addatives make sure that the tank is full. Any airspace left will allow condensation.

The best way I have found of making sure the fuel doesn't go off is to use the boat. Can't see the point in spending loads of dosh on something thats going to sit idle for half the year! Its a whole heap better for the engine too!
