Having had a problem with my fuel, i'm looking for an additive to add to my diesel each time i top up.

Fuel Set & Marine 16 Diesel Fuel Complete both seem good products, but Fuel Set is about 1\4 the price. Is it a question of you get what you pay for -ie is Marine 16 Diesel Fuel Complete 4x better than Fuel Set, or is it just a question of what the market will stand?

I believe that Fuel Set got a pretty decent review in the PBO comparative tests of diesel treatment earlier this year. As has already been observed, this is a very difficult question for the ordinary user to answer - the frequency of problems with untreated diesel is pretty low, so how do you know if the stuff you are adding is doing any good - at least till you break down.

I'm not sure if the experiences of someone that burns 2000 litres of fuel in a summer is very significant - he was probably getting through it so fast that there was no time for the dreaded bug to get a grip!

A PBO test is here, but from the Marine 16 site. There has been a later test (this year?) but I don't think the results were too much different.

Marine 16 and Grotamar came top. So it looks like you pays your money and takes your choice.

Both will work.

I use Fuel set and have done for many years with no problems including using it to treat some pretty marginal "fuel". The problem I have with the biocides is the requirement to safely dispose of water from the seperator (you cant put it into the sea or the drains) and that they are harmful substances.

If you speak to the Cyrus people they say it emulsifies the water and it is burnt with the fuel....

Maybe, but on the other hand the tank is 1012 litres, so the fuel is not being changed very often.

Have been a Fuel Set user for some 30 years and have been very happy with it. Started when my diesel tank became infested with 'the bug', but Fuel Set sorted that out effectively and continues to do so, despite my fuel suppliers being known to have contamination in their fuel.
