Fuel separator or fuel filter as primary?

Take a good look at the way the ports are marked on a cav filter - follow the flow through . The IN ports generally run into the spigot tube - which runs straight into the bowl.
I have seen some marked the other way round though ?
Your call - just swap the ports over if you want it the other way.

Generally the flow goes into the bowl first, big water droplets fall to the bottom with any dirt then gets sucked through the filter

A CAV filter/agglomerator is what you need which has reverse flow through the filter first to "agglomerate" the water into large drops (as already said!).

If it's designed to work in a particular way, and if they go to the trouble of moulding direction arrows into the housing, why would you want to do the opposite?

Well worth a view. Got me rethinking a lot about diesel this year - guess who found some gunk in his primary filter!
