Fuel problem????

last time i started the engines i had to keep the key turned for much longer than usual....
She fires.....
Then dies a few seconds later....

Try again still with a long time till she fired.....
then dies....but longer than first time...


try again....fires and the engine keeps running but when i put extra revs on she seems to be hunting....but keeps running....
did a 1 1/2 hour trip from Ipswich to Shotley with no problems. only low revs and slow speed for that....
return was pretty much the same

Today tried again and exactly the same.....though didnt actually go anywhere...

Any ideas?
Port engine perfectly ok
fuel in both tanks from various places
Volvo D3-160
 
no glows as far as i know....

we are talking engines only 4 year old.....so AFAIK there shouldnt be any glows...

should have looked at my car engine more closely (I'm under the bonnet enough!)-if a modern common-rail diesel doesn't have glowplugs, why do I have to wait for the light to go out? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
Dont know about the electricery stuff, the big posh boat next to me, wont go either. But if conventional diesel, theres only one thing that will stop it. No fuel. Blocked filters or air in the system. But what ever the reason, there is no fuel getting to where it's needed.

the last new diesel car I had started immediatley i turned the key.....no time delay for glow plugs......and no waiting for the light to go out....


In fact i ran out of fuel in that car....just put some more in the tank, turned the key and away she went.....isnt that usual for the common rail engines?

I cant fault your comment...but these are so called modern engines....
if there was a problem getting fuel to where it was needed they wouldnt run....
problem is after a while she keeps running....cant say i noticed the hunting when actually moving.....
 
Can't help with why you are having a problem but I noticed your comment about no raw water filters.

I see you have the S29 with the D3-160s; I have an SC29 with the same engines.

The first model of the engine from volvo was the D3-160A-A which did not have raw water filters as standard. The D3-160A-B for use with shaft drive did as it doesn't have the strainer on the out-drive leg. The D3160A-A was then replaced by the A-C which does have the strainer as standard from what I can see. This made me think that perhaps Volvo decided the engine really should always have a raw water filter.

I had the strainers retro-fitted to mine the first time it came out of the water - feels much safer! Relatively simple job to fit at the top of the large inverted U bend next to the impellor.

Just to set the story straight.

Modern direct injection LDA (Light Duty Automotive) engines do have fast acting glow plugs. However they do not assist cold starting. The glow plugs are there just to eliminate white smoke when motor is cold and fuel system is on the start up timing table.

Forget diapham lift pumps history, and electronic engine paranoia.

You have all the symptoms of a fuel system problem, probably filter related. Get the filters changed using the correct proceedure.

However ask somebody QUALIFIED to inspect your fuel system and check to see if it complies with Volvo installation guidelines to make sure it meets their specification. Do not assume it does because it is a new boat. Most builders rate from plain unnaceptable to poor in terms of installation quality which is why the people who install engines are rarely any good at fixing them.

Dirty fuel is the root cause of 97% of problems with modern engines.
 
Have the fuel filters been changed recently? if so could be dragging air i.e not fitted properly, if not could require changing, you are not getting the required amount of fuel
 
Could be

Small leak in the lower fuel lines.

This would allow fuel to drain , hence slow start.

Self bleeding then allows fuel to be pumped to injectors.

Hunting is a classic air in fuel lines symptom.

If your boat was older I would point you to the flexible fuel pipes.

Could they have been damaged , have you fitted anything down there and drilled through.

Perhaps just check the connections to the lower fuel lines are tight.
No good looking when the engine is hot as it will evaporate the leaking fuel.

Leaving the engine on tick over may show a fuel seap.

Check that its not something daft like the fuel cut off switch being turned off. Did this last year thinking it was the gas shut off switch /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Still gave us about 1200rpms worth of diesel though.
