Hi all,
I am putting together some costings for moving a boat from UK to Malta via Corsica and Sardinia as a holiday trip on Route. Can anybody help with average fuel prices ( Diesel) as they are now, in the following Countres.
UK south coast, North France, Portugal, Gibralta, Spain I Know, Corsica, Sardinia, Italy west coast, Malta. If you can help by giving me an update if your in any of these countrys, it will help with my disturbing fuel projections. Thanks all

The last time I was in Corsica (October 08) it was 63 detax and 125 taxed. Should be less now, with oil price having fallen. Sardinia and Italy tend to be v similar, except you'll have to pay a taxed rate most likely. Others would have better info on prices there

You wouldn't touch italy mainland would you? Only Sardinia and the left/bottom side of Sicily

In Sardinia it's now €1,1/liter.
You might consider Tunisia, which is not far from your route from Southern Sardinia to Malta.
Afaik it's around half a Euro per liter down there.

Yup, forgot to mention, that's true also in Italy.
And for commercial boats, also if you're staying in Italy.
But only in authorized pumps, and with a bit of paperwork.

Dont forget the Sardinia landing fees when you are planning.
From June to Sept I believe.
I havent seen anything saying that they arent still charging.

At the moment, I'm favouring a long slow run from Mahon to Tunisia but you may have some comments on this stragegy. Its just over 300 miles - just beyond our normal cruising range so the plan would be to set off one evening at 8/10 knots until about 8 or 9 oclock the following morning - then finish off the rest of the day at normal cruising speeds. Thats my idea at the moment anyway.

Thanks Mapis and others the trip is private and the boats not commercial. Trip takes us between corsica and sardinia then across to west coast italy and down to Bay of Naples, and on down to Sicily and then Valletta. Returning from Valletta short handed so want to make the quickest leaps back hence valleta - sicily- south Sardinia -Mahon Menorca. To cruise at 23knots we burn 460 lts per hour so don't fancy the extra miles to Tunisia and would probably burn off any benefit.

I have estimated total fuel from UK to be in excess of 70,000 ltrs hence wanting updates on fuel prices.

Glad to help! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Btw, are you aware of how many are those extra miles you don't fancy?
I gave a quick look at charts on my pc, which confirmed what I suspected:
The shortest route from Valletta to Mahon is a straight 540nm non-stop.
Valletta-Bizerte is 240nm (possibly with Pantelleria island in between), plus 304nm Bizerte-Mahon: total 544nm.
That's a 10 minutes difference at your cruising speed!
In fact, the Italian alternative is longer - though not that much:
Valletta-Sicily-Sardinia-Mahon is between 550 and 560nm, depending on where you want to stop in Sicily and Sardinia.
Obviously, the above do not take into accout the preferences you and your guests might have towards all these places, which are indeed very different.

Thanks Hurricane,

Know about the landing fees however this happened firts trip 2006 then last year nothing also a couple of local skippers spent a fourtnight touring Sardinia and had nothing ? Maybe a good post for an acurate update from any skippers local.

With regard to your trip. You know from your trip from the UK exactly the range of your boat, Unfortunatly I'm going off factory fuel consumption figs, which I guess will be in favour of them making the boat apear more economical. I have the following 23 knots 454 ltrs per hour and 14.5 knots 268 ltrs per hour. so untill I know for definate I want to keep legs below 300.

Your trip sounds fine, also you will probably find that the wind will be running from the Bay of Lions North Westerly so you will probably have the sea on your Starboard quarter for the dark bit of your trip, First few hours.

Fuel in Mahon, I'm not sure whether you plan to stay a day in Mahon, as the fuel bay only opens 10am to 4pm in April. However if you are only calling for fuel a tanker is easy to arrange. (Campsa Fuel and a couple of cents a ltr cheeper)
Let me know your plan by PM and If you require I will give you the number for the tanker.

For us the direct run is not an option as the family will be on board. and this part of the overall run from the UK to Malta takes in their holls, so we plan going between the islands of Sardinia and Corsica Bonafacio then down the Italian west coast ( Bay of Naples and on for Sicily for a few days finaly at Valletta Malta they will probably abandon ship to fly to UK leaving me waiting for a good wether opening for the trip back to Mahon. Valletta-Sicily-Corsica-Mahon.

Going to the factory in the morning to see the build to date. If its anything like last time about 30 blokes climbing around with spanners and screwdrivers. I belive the engines are in so the wether deck and superstructure will be soon to follow. Supose it will look like a boat then.

Thanks - I'll be in touch.

I dont suppose that you can take some pics of the boat's build and post then on this forum?

There are people on this forum that would be VERY interested to see such a beautiful boat at various stages of build - me for one.

Maybe ask the owners if they mind??????

[/ QUOTE ]They're still in place, but have been revised and are now on a daily/weekly/monthly basis, instead of a lump yearly sum regardless of time spent.
And they're due only if the boat is moored in a marina, not when anchoring in a bay.
Rates are based on LOA as follows (with 50% reduction for sailboats):
14 - 15,99m: 17€/d, 114€/w, 410€/m
16 - 19,99m: 71€/d, 475€/w, 1.710€/m
20 - 23,99m: 107€/d, 713€/w, 2.565€/m
24 - 29,99m: 179€/d, 1.188€/w, 4.275€/m
30 - 59,99m: 357€/d, 2.375€/w, 8.500€/m
above 60m: 536€/d, 3.563€/w, 12.825€/m

MapisM

thanks for that, "That will be the answer". Last time I stayed on anchor, whilst waiting for another boat to meet us. The figures you posted will be of great help and cleares it up Thanks.

With regard to the other sugestion re a direct run back to Mahon, at the moment with the consumption figs I have, It would mean running at a displacment speed of 9 knots to get that range. And for 60 hours. Being short handed on the return trip I dont fancy that at all. also to fly further crew in would kill any savings. I'm very comfortable with stints of aprox 160-190-200 to get us back to mahon. We just have to live with the fuel costs. and maybe not the best stops but the family will be off the boat and it will just be a run home for us.

Figs I Have
14.5 Knots 268 ltrs per hour range 460nm
23 knots 454 ltrs per hour range 431
9 Knots is not much over tickover speed 600rpm

So if shes anything like her smaller sister ship which I have driven for the last four years It won't like going slow. and it won't like a beam sea. she'll sprint through a fairly rough sea But act like a p**t up tramp in anything worse than a 4/5 Great these fast boats!!!

Might as well give you the range for flat out

38+knots 950 ltrs per hour range 300

Anyway It should be a staggering boat and I'm sure a great sprinter, But it never was planned to be a long distance cruiser.

Hello Hurricane

Yep that would be great.
I'm half considering leaving the boat in Malta for a few weeks before the return to Spain.
Maybe you know of some places where we could find a berth?

Like you though - I cant wait.

70,000 ltrs wow
I've just picked myself up off the floor

Think that is bad, I was chatting to the captain of Alfa Nero in the summer and it costs the owner £1/4m just to fill it once and that is gone fairly sharpish if they are giving it any berries for a while /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Hurric, if leaving the boat in Malta I suggest the camper nicholson very smart marina. It's across the bay from Valetta, so it's the right side. +356 2248 000. www.cnmarinas.com. Not the cheapest in malta but cheaper than Spain and they'll take good care of your boat. It's the one i visited on business in the summer 2008 and posted pics of
