So can anyone explain the logic for Diesel at 60 / 40 rate today.

Cowes (above the chain ferry) £1.47 with discounts at 500 & 1000 litres. Port Hamble (MDL) £1.87.

So for Hamble there is actually a major fuel depot in the Village, yet to get the stuff to the Island a ferry will have to transport the tanker. Or if fuelled by lighter then an extra 8 - 10 miles for the lighter to get to Cowes.

OK I know those who choose to pay the exorbitant MDL berthing fees get a discount, but this is ridiculous and in my view blatant exploitation of a near monopoly for fuel supply on the Hamble.

I know where I will be getting my fuel.

Out of interest how do you obtain Commercial Diesel at £1.47 as they also quote Diesel at 60/40 - Propulsion/Domestic £1.74? I do wonder about the MDL at cost fuel is any better than the price in Cowes.

We topped the tanks in May at the MDL marina near us becaus they were competitive at that time, which I thought was unusual. We topped them again when on holiday in July and didn’t fill up at MDL when there as a visitor because they most definitely weren’t competitive. We stopped off at the next marina and saved quite a bit per litre. Hard to figure what makes them tick!

Last 2 times I have filled up it was an MDL marina, on the Thames, listed price £1.82
/l. With berthing discount and a 60/40 split I paid just under £1.60 per litre so not so bad.

Last time I looked red was 89p a litre here. That was a few weeks ago.

Unleaded petrol from the pontoon peaked at £2.22 recently but it's dropped down again now.

Makes a change for anything on the island to be cheaper, maybe they filled at a good price and still have some left - next time might be different especially if they get to read your complimentary comments.o_O

Love your new boat BTW nice throaty rumble from those motors too as you left. (y)

no different on the roads, I often see fuel at up to 20p per litre more on the motorway than my local garage, I’m sure you can guess which one I fill up at but some still don’t care and pay the higher prices.

You’re comparing eggs with onions.

The MDL price is 60/40, the Cowes price is commercial.

That said Cowes is consistently the cheapest supplier for diesel. They openly advertise their prices on the website and in 15 years we’ve not had a bad batch.

There will be some discrepancies as retailers re-stock. They only know the price on delivery and adjust from there. We had a £1.34 fill this year when everywhere else was £1.50 plus but it was just because we timed it well. The next day when Cowes took delivery of new fuel it also went up to £1.50.

Yarmouth was also pretty keenly priced when we fuelled there recently and the fill was nice and quick.

But for us Cowes is our go to.

Worth pointing out that we don’t get berth holder discount anywhere which can make a very substantial difference.

Henry ?

Apologies I didn't have longer to chat - just as I was preparing my lines my lock slot was called, so I had to go. Next time over I will look you up.

Yep, we tended to fuel at Cowes. Always competitive and good quality.

Most times the lock guys will pass you a line of theirs to hang on and if you are at or near free flow you can hold position in the lock easy peasy. In our case with bow and stern thrusters even a temporary line isn't needed though habit has us rig one on centre cleat just in case. or we wait for free flow in full since we have no need to hurryand can plan well ahead.
