Howard, these are the guys we had do the cleaning last time. Give them a try as well as the number I gave you earlier.

At a boat jumble last year got a CAV filter for £4. Connected to an old electric lift pump.
Connected together with clear PVC tubing and a rigid section of 12 mm tube, which is poked into the tank, so it can be moved around into the corner etc. Runs for a couple of hours on the house battery, then change the filter ( Cost about £1.50) and run again.
Quite popular now with club members who want to do similar

Spent £600 having 800 ltr "Polished" Easter 2010, fuel was treated with a biocide, supposedly to cure/remove diesel bug. September 2010 filters blocked with the diesel bug again, complained to the contractor who informed me that "We don't give a guarantee" Racor Parker sell a kit that is permanently installed in your fuel system, I know what I would do.

To be honest, I would not bother. If there are a couple of bugs left in there, they will soon fornicate.

Get some Soltron and stick it in the tank. Keep some spare filters. Best thing then is to burn diesel. ( not easy now I know).

I've had the bug a good few times, always got rid of it fairly smartly.

when if irst got my boat it had been on the hard for over 7yrs.
it had 160 gallons of diesel in it.
just pumped out the the fuel.then pumped it back in again(filter in funnel).
no prob's at all.

but then my engines are good old perkins that will run on anything.
if you have modern engines they do like the fuel to be really clean.

Had my fuel done, access panels put in the tanks etc last year. Massively expensive.
Most of my present problems are due to dirt from the fuel - despite Racors etc.
You can buy a polishing kit for about £600 - less than most would charge to do the job. Or as has been suggested a Racor and a fuel pump.

Just started a fuel cleaning business part time called Diesel Clean Machine (DCM) and is a 3 stage filtration system designed for leisure boats. I have found in my current job, marine engineer for famous marine breakdown company based on the south coast, i come across blocked filters and lines almost every weekend. I am charging £195 for a single fuel tank and £295 for twin tanks. any additional costs would be changing of filters, travel and repairs if required. I also check the fuel lines and unions for damage and report back any findings. I am based in Southampton area so if anyone on the forum is interested call me on 07595 709941 .
