Can you advise me please. I am fitting a new fuel tank. My MD1 diesel engine was connected to the old one by a really effective system which includes a small "jamjar type" water seperator and some clear plastic pipe about 8mm o.d. The old pipe is sound but I feel I ought to replace it and cannot ifnd a supplier. The separator is also sound but I have no idea where to get a new seal or the material to make one. Can anyone advise. Seaesta

To start with why change something which is ok !!
The agglomerater there are a few types of these but if it's a Zenith or other British make then I would have them. They were mainly in rubber but some had cork as well.
Measure the size and we can go from there.

Clear plastic pipe is no longer recommended for fuel lines - when I fitted a new tank for my MD2B I replaced the existing (and servicable) plastic with copper. Any marine engineers should be able to provide the pipe, and associated fittings you would need.

I actually think that clear plastic has a number of advantages - it is flexible and you can inspect the fuel-flow visually - but it is a brave man who disregards 'recognised best practice' these days.

Dear Bedoiun and MTB thanks for your replies. I will contact MTB re the washer. I cannot believe that copper is safer in my case because the engine moves a lot on the a/v mountings and is sure to fatigue the copper.

No - you certainly don't take copper all the way to the engine! The last part (in my case from the CAV filter to the engine) is an armoured flexible pipe. Even so I am somewhat concerned about the possibility of long term fatigue of the run from the tank to the CAV filter.

However that arrangement is required for coded boats, and for the BSS; so there must be some problems with clear plastic fuel hoses.

Thanks. I am pretty sure that the present plastic job has been in place since the early 70's. If I cannot find a hose supplier I will do the bulk of the run in copper and use the old plastic pipe to make the last flexible section of the pipe. There should be enough left to make a couple of spares complete with olives etc and I will keep these to hand.

The fuel pipe on my Yanmar 1GM (only relevant because little engines probably vibrate more!) is clear plastic with some kind of coarse mesh reinforcement. The kind of thing you can buy in motor accessory shops. It seems to stand up to diesel very well (no obvious cracking or hardening, and I do check it regularly) but I had one embarrassing incident where it split where it fitted on to the fuel pump spigot - probably because the hose clip was overtightened. Not sure what the end fittings are like on armoured hose, and how and where you buy it.

Excuse me dropping into your mailbox, but are you interested in new replacement mounts for your MD1. I needed some, took months sourcing these strange v-shaped items back through many routes and then discovered my engine was dead. If interested please just mail back. If not, apologies for dropping in.
