Was joined by my brother who is a genius with most types of engines at the boat yesterday. Got the MD11c running briefly and it sounded good albeit a tad fast in Idle at 2000rpm
It then cut out and my brother worked through the system having determined that it was a fuel supply problem and after lots of testing changing filters etc came to the conclusion that the Fuel lift pump was the culprit.

Can this be serviced or should I be looking to get hold of a new one and if so any suppliers or replacement parts looked at Keypart but couldnt find it. Any other info that could be helpful

Regards

There s a filter under the cap that has a bolt through it; may be clogged. Try cleaning that first.

I rather assumed they'd have done that already. The manual is available online and tells you how to do it. When I've had lift pump problems, it's been pinholes in the diaphragm.

Good to hear someone else has got an old Volvo diesel. Mine's an MD2B; abt similar age. I replaced my fuel pump 3 yrs ago. Keypart supplied. For my engine the part no. is 21134777-R £96 which they still have in stock. Ring them to ask if yours shares the same pump.

Isn't that more expensive than the one in post 2?

2000 rpm is rather more than a "tad" fast The idle speed should be 650 to 780. The max speed is only 2500. We used to cruise at 1800 to 2000.

A repair kit is available for the old non sealed lift pump (£65 from keypart.)

A replacement sealed pump is £96 from Keypart but a little less, as above, from ASAP

Dunno why you could not find the repair kit or the pump on Keyparts site!

Think the Keypart ref is for a fuel pump not the Lift Pump which is what I need

TBH both ASAP and Keypart need to improve their search engines both are a bit poor.

Seems a bit pointless to spend £65 on a kit when a new one is only £20 more

Also notice that for an MD2020 a lift pump is only £40

I was kidding about the TAD bit any ideas why it might be doing that. was the first start in 10 years!!!

Key part call it a " fuel pump" The picture makes it obvious that it is the lift pump

With Keypart you just enter the engine type and scroll down the page until you see what you want ....
with ASAP you enter "Lift pump for MD11C" and hey presto ......

Both equally simple!

Your choice!

Irrelevant. ITYWF that it is a totally different type

No idea. Start with the operation and linkages from the control lever

If it is the old type of V-P lift pump, the one with the serviceable diaphagm etc., it is also worth having a look at the security of the one way valve in (from memory) the pump top. This is pressed in at manufacture and can come loose. The fix used on mine was to put it in position and then use a centre punch to distort the metal of the pump top (to "peen it over"? - not sure the terminology is correct) such that the valve was once again held in position. It was a bodge, but one that lasted for an entire season and which looks as though it would have lasted much longer.
