Fuel in the Solent June ‘23

Refuelled during a charter on Saturday whilst the guests were enjoying lunch in Cowes and pleasantly surprised. First time under £1.00 for a while.

I was actually expecting it to be £1.08 but they’d had a delivery the day before and prices are set then. 3p per litre discount also applied based on quantity purchased.

Commercial rate obviously before anyone asks.

Sorry to hijack, but now about to buy a 46ft boat instead of 22 with D3, I used to fill up from cans, about 30l at a time, now the tank is 1500l and usage of about 20 or 30g/h, is Marina fuel dearer than road? Not sure where she will be berthed yet , could be north wales or Essex

@ColleyV8 Marina fuel is generally cheaper than road but lately once you've added the tax it's possible you won't find much difference. The prices shown above are commercial rate, as a leisure user there's extra tax to pay on top. With your usage, filling up at a marina will more likely be a bit cheaper, also a lot more convenient

Yes that's basically the 60/40 split.

Yes, 60% for propulsion basically at road fuel (DERV) rate and 40% for heating, generating and cooking basically at domestic heating oil rate (5% VAT), it's dyed red to stop it being used in road vehicles. You can specify any other split from 100/0 to 0/100 but HMRC accept 60/40 as a 'usual' split; it might also be difficult to persuade a marina to calculate any figures other than 100/0 or 60/40 as being too much paperwork. Marina fuel, even at 60/40, is generally more expensive then a DERV road filling station because of the comparatively smaller volumes shifted.

If you do berth in North Wales, be aware of possible problems if you go to Northern Ireland or the Irish Republic with GB marina red diesel in your tank, because it's all complicated over there, eg the Irish Republic have green diesel. Probably not a problem provided you take all relevant fuel receipts with you. Doubtless someone will be along to say whether it's a problem or not. Similarly, if you use Essex, there have historically been problems with taking red diesel to the Continent but it seems to have died down now; take fuel receipts there too.

Try being on the east coast. Just rung round and out of nine marinas the cheapest is £1.17 and the most expensive is £1.73 at 60:40. The average being £1.58. Can't help feeling we're being taken for a ride..

I thought that might be the case; they do shift more fuel than most. Might the two facts be linked? One other marina told me that they have to charge a lot because they don't sell much, the cause and effect seems not to have occurred to them.
