Apopros the red fuel thread,,, here is a poll about fuel consumption in your boat. ... In a year... Apologies in advance if I got the splits wrong... at the moment it is a stab in the dark.. I have made it as wide as possible to allow for both raggies and stinkies.

I am interested from the PoV of exactly how much the extra tax on fuel would actually deliver to the hard pressed exchequer.

PS.. It has been kindly pointed out that I made a typo on the last two options.. I hope people can work out I meant 640 to 1,280 l ... not 12,800l.. (I can't edit that mistake).. Though there must be some very rich types who can use that much.. how the other .1% live

My fuel consumption is very low because I have a boat that sails well (and I like sailing). Consumption is so low that I don't bother keeping a record.

I think you need to look again at figures in the last two options. :D

29 views but only six people bother to reply....

It's not compulsory but hardly a lot of effort to tick a button.

What if 26 of those don't have boats?

What is the timescale? Daily, weekly, whateverly?

Is it what you use in total or per boat you sail?

Just sayin.......

I must be a thicko as I don't understand your poll.

At fast coastal cruise ie 2100 rpm she burns 3.2 liters per hour and 6.3 kts. At best economy 1700 rpm 2.5 liters (approx) and 5 kts.

Perhaps the question could have been phrased better? My understanding of it, I raised the same question in a post on the Red thread, was how much fuel do you use in a year?

Come on guys, I think it's pretty clear he meant per annum!

Though maybe per hour for some of our stinkpot friends ;)

How much fuel? A shed load more than I'm happy with!
Last year I motored most of the way across Biscay and down to Lisbon then a third of the way back.
Even if I were just going from my mooring (up R Frome) to get out to sea it's about an hour and a quarter, I do it mostly on engine because it's a lot of direction changes round the bends and I want to be out at sea asap.

My boats been out about forty times this year, much the same as last, and I've recently tipped the last of the gallon can into the car in case it was 'going off'. Next year I won't be so profligate and will just half fill it. I love sailing a keelboat on The Solent.

320 to 640 for us which looks like it's very high up compared to most but this year was probably more unusual in that we did about 1500 miles, mostly one way and often without wind, or with so little wind that we would have been below 3 knots and that is our minimum cut-off when voyaging, sometimes 5 knots minimum if that would cause us to spend an extra night at sea.

I hope we'll use an awful lot less next Summer where it will be occasional ovenighters but mostly day cruises. But if it's a 5 knot wind and that lovely island anchorage is 50 miles away then...

I assumed that the OP meant "litres per annum" and I've replied in the "80 to 160" bracket. I think we are borderline and may nudge over to the "160 to 320" bracket - depends very much on how cold and long the winter is - a lot of what we purchase goes into the heater...

We used about 8000 litres taking a Sunreef 74 from Antigua to Barcelona in the Spring but I don't know how much that is in gallons without a calculator. I suppose it depends if you use Imperial or US ones as well.
