I've noticed recently when running on lowish tanks, my starboard indicates quite a bit less than port (showing in the red when port is showing quarter tank) but when I refill to full, both tanks take the same suggesting that the starboard is underreading when tank is low. Both gauges show full and roughly track each other down to about half tanks when the starboard then starts to suggest a higher fuel burn which apparently isn't the case. Anyone had experience of this?

yes we have the same, put it down to the fact that the port tank is in line with the boat and the starboard one across the beam, we rely on the one that shows the least amount remaing.

I have yet to see a "Traditional Gauge" that is anything other than a vauge representation of what is in the tank and having twin guages and twin tanks only highlights the discepancies.

I have had a "Tank Tender Gauge" fitted.

I always fill to full and note the ammount taken on each side as well as the original Tank Tender reading and build a pattern on a spread sheet. This not only shows your fuel burn but also any irregularities such as damaged props etc.

Hi iwould suggest you buy a good boat as all my fairline gauges have been very acurate indeed, regards m m 1.

When I got my replacment boat earlier this year at the first opportunity I filled her to the brim and the did a 30 min run (15 min each way) at a set rpm as trimmed as best I could -
geting back to the fueling berth I then refilled. At least now I know the Ltr /Hr used at a fast planning speed. Since the fuel gauge can show anything between 1/4 & 3/4 depending on attitude, I feel a good deal happier keeping a simple fuel log on board - guess you could argue that it would be part of the SOLAS passage planning regirements to know what endurance you have on board?
