Fuel for a day out

No you certainly aren't, but most are north of me! Going to have a look round the lorry pumps as per CX54WEK's info. Boat owning is an expensive hobby and reducing costs should be factored in. Sallis isn't bothered but he's probably happy to fill his car up at Motorway Services!

And buy the food there as well

if I get a diesel boat I might just get a diesel tank in my garden (I have quite a large garden) fill it up and then take 40 ltrs each time which will look like free boating...

...because I don't resent the big purchase but do tend to dislike spending £50 - £60 on petrol at the pump each time

You could get a similar result by brimming the tank at the start of the season at the marina (& maybe once or twice during the season). It would cost you more per litre but save you the cost of a tank and the hassle of carrying fuel around and decanting it.

Sorry but I cant get that. Most trips I use about 40 % of the tank so cant see how that would work at all

That sounds Impressive...
My boat is an 18ft sports boat with a slightly modified mercruiser 5.0 mpi with 1.47-1 ratio.
We only use her on Loch Lomond, but £20 of fuel will see a sensible day out....£30-£40 will see a few blasts and a bit of water sports.
Smart craft software just the other day showed cruising at 2400 rpm at 26mph and a consumption of about 20 litres per hour. Not too shabby for such a special machine. Big engine, small boat works well !
Ps...love the fletcher 19 sports cruiser, great hull and set up

Very good from what I have read those MPI engines are quite economical

So the general consensus seems to be that fuel costs is not that big a deal in the wider / grand scheme of boating costs and I completely agree with that.
Let's agree then that this will be the last fuel cost related discussion on here and put that energy instead into exploring in our boats
What I don't understand is who has given you to right to say what people should or should not talk about on the forum? If the subject bores you then don't read it but if other want to talk about it then they should be allowed to do so without you pressuring them not to. This isn't your forum you know!

I for one am interested in discussing the fuel costs of running out boats and clearly there are others that do too.

+1. Have you taken delivery of your Benny 7 yet ? Interested to know how you get on with it.

When I started looking for a cruiser to upgrade my cuddy speedboat fuel costs were a major concern. I'd spend hours researching costs and consumption and spent days going through various simulations such as this http://www.boat-fuel-economy.com/ try to work out what my spend would be and budget etc. Basically I was worried I was dreaming and simply couldn't afford it all once I had bought the boat. Guess what, I cant yet somehow manage to muddle on and as you know I'm out every weekend anyway. Fuel which was such a major concern was dwarfed by the reality of ownership. The boat without the man maths works out at close on £460 a weekend for this season all up. That's before fuel. How did I get to that figure? £6k outdrives overhaul, 2k mooring and hard costs, 3k vinyls in cockpit replacement, 1.6 k engine service and maintenance items, remainder sundries to total 15k. I might use 1.5k in fuel in the average season or just 10% of my spend. Dont get hung up on fuel and dont buy a big boat if you dont have a job and are skint as you profess. You have 3 already!

EDIT

Before you say it was a bad year what with outdrives etc last year was worse. Boat spend came to 25k. :D

That dreaded word depreciation , particular with those who chose to buy new boats makes the annual fuel bill more insignificant in the scheme of things .

We did 80 hrs last year @ from 40 to 200 L-h -- never tottered it up.Just enjoyed every min.
In the sun in the Med, without the worry of an aging outdrive bill..
Actually don, t mind burning diesel ( and paying for it ) -- is that not the reason you have a motorboat !
I started with sailboats yachts , so there's always a back stop - step back if costs became an issue .

Just seems for the sake of completeness folks above have gone into other costs in detail ( quite rightly in my book ) on the fuel issue £ - to show how little is actually is in the grand scheme of things -and NOT taken a helicopter view of depreciation in there annual running costs .

Just factual that's all no personal critism intended or implied at anybody .

Paul, I'm in your camp in that I also find fuel costs a tiny fraction of the cost of ownership, probably less than the French yearly boat tax! But we are all dying to know, how much fuel does 700 four stroke supercharged ponies use? Please, humour us

Well, all I can say is that the sun was shining the other day so we thought we would return the boat back to her home in Portsmouth. So we set off from Essex and hit economy mode. In short the Mrs and I went from the Crouch to Portsmouth in j 6 hours and 45 mins and we were at a constant 25 Knts. Fuel bill was about £350 quid not that I care a hoot, not because I am flippant but in a week when kids have been blown up the fact that I can go boating means that to be worrying over a bit of fuel is a load of bollox. ( spelt wrong on purpose so it gets through ). Happy boating to everyone this weekend and a cheery wave from us as we may "fly past" literally tomorrow at around 40 Knts.

I do take the point that you and others make Paul... in the grand scheme of things fuel is not a major cost. Nevertheless, it is something people worry about when buying a boat so it is a valid point of discussion if only to show how little we should be concerned. I was considering a much bigger boat when choosing which one to get and it was the worry about running costs, particularly fuel, that made me realise that I should buy the size of boat I could afford to run without concern about the cost so that I could do whatever I wanted to do without the worry. The last thing you want to be concerned about is whether you can afford tomorrow's trip at 25kts instead of 6kts because you are trying to save money.

Boats are for fun. No one has to buy a boat. So get the one you want and can afford to run and use it! simples!
