Last weekend I changed an injector pump. Whilst doing it I changed the fuel filter on the engine, I have changed the prefilters earlier in the year. I was amazed to find a load, about a teaspoon full, of gritty debris in the bottom of the filter bowl. its all cleaned out now, what I dont undestand is how it got past the pre filter?

Oh well, I know that all is clean and good. Just need to fix the fuel line and bleed her through and its up up and away.

Ben, I may not be the most accomplished engineer in the World but possibly ' the gritty substance' came from somewhere between the prefilter and the fuel filter? So what is knackered/rusted in between.?

Hi! I suggest that you check the porosity "size" of your pre filters against your main ones to assess whether or not your pre filters are too porous.

Have a look at Purelator Filters. They have 50% more surface area than others with a finer filter medium. Upshot is that they'll still have the same flow rate but filter out the finer stuff as well.
You'll notice the difference after a while. Your engine filters will be cleaner and your pre filters will stop more of the crap.
Where on the engine are your filters, before or after the lift pump?
