Can anyone identify this primary fuel filter? Is the black button on the top for priming and is the nut on the bottom for draining water. How do you replace the element and how often Cheers chaps
In my opinion, and without any admission of liability, implied or otherwise..........
it's a FRAM [now CAV, I think]. The button on top is a priming pump and there is a bleed screw on the right to which you can attach a small diameter hose to catch the bleedings [useful if you want a bit of diesel to clean a paintbrush].
The small hex-headed screw at the lower front is a drain plug.
The element and bowl are probably held in place with a long bolt screwed in from underneath.
I change my fuel filter element [which is a Racor] once a year.
When you buy a new element it should come with new sealing rings.
It does look like a CAV automotive unit and like most filters of this type, are fixed by a long bolt passing through the middle of the filter element.
After years of fiddling with the multi sealing rings etc on the standard CAV type cartridge, I switched to Racor spin on filters. You buy an easy to fit converter kit for the head unit and then it's just a question of spinning off the old and spinning on the new filter like an oil filter cartridge ( you do have to detach and refit to the metal base as well) but it is much simpler and less messy. Downside is that the Racors are more expensive. I change mine at least annually or after a given number of engine hours -- for example when we were coming up the French canals from the Med with a lot of engine time, I did a change at the end of the trip before we left Calais to sail home.
