Fuel filler pipe and breather - why the difference?

Putting in a new tank and was just wondering why I will be putting in expensive fuel filler pipe yet the breather on fuel tanks is usually just normal plastic pipe. Does fuel filler pipe really need to be special?

One is designed to vent out air as the tank fills and suck air in as it empties to the engine and in odd situations vent diesel - occasionally - the other is supposed to be wet with diesel (which may degrade some materials ) regularly .

ideally use diesel rated hose for both - it's not really expensive stuff and the lengths are usually short

On my boat so short I didn't use diesel rated hose - the fuel filler pipe is 4 inches long with 1 inch over the deck fitting and 1 inch over the tank fitting and has never touched diesel in 7 years because the nozzle of any filler goes straight through to the tank (or the end of my filter funnel in unknown locations)

The fuel filler hose is anti static, fire rated, amongst other properties suitable for use with fuel. The vent line is less critical.

You probably don’t need such a high specification of hose for such small fuel volumes and the static spark ignition risk is likely incredibly low, while a fire impacting your fuel line will be the least of your worries.

My fill and vent lines are clear plastic on both my 60 gallon GRP tanks. So far, with +15 years of use, I have not burst into flames and exploded.

The fuel filler pipe needs to be expensive and specially designed (e.g., marine-grade rubber or stainless steel) because it handles direct fuel flow, pressure, and potential spills, requiring resistance to corrosion, heat, and fuel degradation. The breather pipe, usually plastic, only vents vapor and sees less stress, so standard material suffices unless exposed to harsh conditions. For your new tank, stick with the quality filler pipe to ensure safety and longevity.

Diesel tanks can be welded while containing fuel so I don't really see the fire danger. The pipe will also be above the tank, using a Vetus fitting:

But I will use the proper fuel pipe. I just wondered.

By the way there is a huge difference in price with these items depending on online supplier. Some are almost double the price of others.
