My Colvic 43 with twin 370 Diesel Sabre engines is almost ready to go from North Wales to Sant Carles. What would my fuel cost be for the trip? I understand that at a cruising speed of about 20kts she will cover 1.3 miles on one gallon. Am I correct that if I reduce to 6 or 7 kts my consumption will go to about 3 miles per gallon?
I read the article in january 09 issue of MBW called Med March going from Torquay to the same destination and My guess is that the total journey is about 2000 miles. How much is fuel in France, Portugal & Spain? Can anyone work it out? Brian Chesters

Not that easy really...

You need to assess the real HP outtake of the engines at a given speed, then calculate the fuel consumption basedupon that...

Similar hull lenght (45 ft), we calculate approx 35L / hr just above 9 knots...(with safety margin +++)

That would give 2000 NM in approx 200 something hours, and as a result burn just above 7000 Litres of fuel.... Cheaper to get her on a lowloader .. which we did when we took ours from Italy, which is 'slightly' longer and we had time restrictions... (Would take her by sea if I were to go back though).

If your actual consumption is half of ours, then it starts to make finanical sense to take her by sea..

Unless you seriously fancy doing the trip I would suspect that transport by land or ship cargo would be similar or cheaper by the time you factor in breakages and bureaucratic hassle.

Yea - but nothing like as much fun and a real sence of achievment when you've done it.

Hi Brian we have a 43ft displacment boat we cruise at 6 knots boat 40 ft waterline single engine uses 6ltrs hr.
Why not run on one engine spare engine tie the shaft to stop it spinning you should use similar consumption we did this on a twin screw trawler yacht worked well have a nice trip.

Although an achievement 6knots over the Bay of Biscay will be incredibly boring.
I reckon road transport all the way will be £6-7k or why not take it across to France get it transported down to say La Napoule (popular haulage destination...actually I think they put the boats in at the port next door called ????) and the have a nice safe trip doing S. France, down around the Gulf of Lion (note I say around and not across after my last f6-7 experience!!) and down the coast of Spain to San Carles

hi Brian yes my boat is heavy 30 tonne but once you get it moving nothing stops it we do carry over 4000ltrs fuel.
the fuel reading is accurate we have a 200ltr day tank which is served from 4 tanks we meter the filling of the day tank we relate that to the distance travelled.
Regarding fuel due to the size of the tanks we only fuel in duty free areas Gibralter etc
