With our old boat, Serenity (Sealine 310 ambassador with 2xAD41's on 290DP drives) we used to reckon on just under 2 mpg, but were unsure of what to expect from our new boat,Secret Lady (Sealine 350 statesman with 2x KAMD42's on shafts). The previous owner reckoned on about 1mpg including a large safety margin.

Following the recent London trip, we had a couple of good long passages to be able to calculate our fuel consumption. On the trip from Shotley to St Kats, a large part of the Thames was at 8-12kts thanks to HMS Ocean being in the way. We filled up when leaving St Kats (having previously brimmed the tanks at Shotley before departure) we used 239 litres for the 87nm trip, which I reckon works out to around 1.65 mpg. The return trip to Shotley, where we again filled the tanks, used 281 litres for the same distance, which gives us 1.4 mpg. On the return trip we were punching tide in the Thames for a while, but also cruising faster where allowed (no HMS Ocean this time!) which I think is the reason for the lower mpg figure. I do wonder whether our engine problem was starting to manifest itself a bit at this point to, even though we didn't notice it.

Are those figures somewhere others would expect?

As a PS to this, I received my MBM through the door today and was interested to read the Owners report on a 1988 305 Statesman. I do find the fuel consumption figures a bit unbelievable. They are saying they use 4gph at a cruisng speed of 24kts, which is 6mpg! Even if that is for each engine, that is still 3mpg which sounds very good indeed, or a typo!

Assuming that even on the return trip you were doing some slower speed stuff then I guess this sounds about right Mark. 1mpg is a useful rule of thumb for a planing flybridge cruiser and assuming that you might be the right side of this combined with some slower speed cruising then 1.4 sounds reasonable.

I bess the real test would be to fill up at RNSYC and do a run to Southwold and back at planing speeds and then top up again to see what you are really using at cruise.

I don't really want to think what we might use......
