I just wondered if anybody would like to take an educated guess at the fuel consumption of Fifty Shades for me?

2X Volvo TAMD40b (3.7 litre 6cyl Diesel Turbo on shaft) engines, around 5 tonnes wet, and a semi displacement hull.

We filled her at Bray, and the 8 hour trip from Bray-Penton-Bray hasn't even moved the needle on the Starboard gauge (50 gallons a side) but the Port tank has dropped, as it also runs the 4KW Eberspacher, which has been used quite a lot in the last few months!

River speeds see the engines just above idle, at around 1000rpm (3600rpm max, 3400 max cruise)

We have yet to take her on the tidal stretches, but top speed is around 28kts (with a huge wallet and testicles no doubt) and the previous owner reckoned 14-20kts cruise speeds.

Has anybody has a similar power/size boat to compare?

Thanks.... ;)

I have 32ft about 5/6tonnes 2 x 150hp Volvos usually 1gph or 5mpg on the river, if I use only one engine between locks can get slightly better but not really worth the effort. 30knts flat out and 20/22knt cruise is about 8-10gph depending on the conditions. Certainly on the river have had a selection of different boats with petrol and diesel and they all used about 1gph.

Hmkay.

No Regrets used to do about 5mpg overall, so maybe not so much different on the River.

I guess the tidal bits depend on my testicle size huh? :o

The gauges really aren't much use other than for rough indications of tank level. I ran from Bray to Byron's last year and the indicator hardly moved. Then I checked out how the gauges moved and found the sender was an 8 step which meant around 10 gallons for one step change in the sender.
If you want to check accurately you need to dip the tank if you can access it. A 1 metre wooden rule is around £5 at an ironmongers and I keep one alongside the fuel tank.
