Being new to motor cruising, can anyone with first hand experience tell me the fuel consumption per hour at cruising speed,

for a ford sabre 120hp engine, please.

PS. fitted in a Freeman33 sedan built in 1977

tried e mailing Lancing marine ,but they don·nt respond.

Small diesels use about the same fuel as equivalent petrol outboards. That's the bad news, they have to rev higher to get the power output. Higher revs= lower economy.
Volvo d3. 170-190 hp.....4 g/hr
Yamaha 160 hp diesel....3 1/2 g/hr
Mercruiser 120 diesel. ....4 g/hr
Volvo 110 hp........3 1/2 g/hr

Somewhere between 3 1/2 to 4 g/hr hour at rated continuous cruise.

Buy an outboard instead!

Rough guess ... about 25Litres per hour ... when you take out 100 HP...

Basis of guess is that you assume that a diesel engine of that era consumes around 210 - 220 grammes of diesel per HP hour... diesel weight @ 0.86 gramme per litre...

Yep, but that type of the engine is more than likely installed on a displacement boat.
And if so, at cruising speed the hull typically demands only 50% of the max power, if that...

Our workboat has twin 120hp sabres, and we run them at 2200 RPM.we have a displacment hull and we punch the tide most of the day,we use about 50lts an hour. hope this helps.

just remembered an old rule of thumb...divide the Hp by 4

6 gallons was stated - at around 7 quid a gallon = 42 squid.
Yep, but I agree with LittleShip & LJS, 3 is bound to be a closer estimate, assuming a displacement boat and a pleasure use.
Workboats usage is more demanding, of course.

OK, I assumed a semi-displacement/ planing hull, do we actually know which it is yet?

But a blue note an hour, no problem, I could tear them up all day long . . . . ;)

And for around 150 quid you could go round Anglesey in a day. I usually choose to do it in 3 or 4 depending where I want to stop & play & dodge the adverse tides & the cost would be around a fiver, assuming I had to do a fair bit of motoring to catch the various tide gates. On a good trip I might not use any fuel at all. There is an annual race around the Island that takes around 24 hrs non-stop & none of them are allowed to use engines.

I can't see me switching to a true MoBo any time soon, altho I do appreciate the ability to use mine as a MoBo when it suits.

I have a deep vee hull with two 120hp Ford D6 engines. About 20l/hour each engine at 2200RPM and about 3l/hour each at half the rpm.
