Following on from the replies i got when i replied to H1's thread about Petrol / Diesel, saying i got 4.4gph, It didn't seem to go down too well.

There was critisicm from some about how i came too that figure. And okay, i see now that it may not be a true running figure, but actually an Average figure. Normally when working out MPG on cars the figure is always an Average figure, so why not with boats?

So if working on the Average, What do you usually get?

Average GPH?=
What size of boat & engine?

As i say mine is usually about 4.4Gallons per Hour..
On a 23'6" boat with 5.0mpi DP.

Hmmm. With cars, the average is a defined average, whereas there's no such thing with a boat. Hence boat people prefer to use actual consumption at a given bhp or rpm. Neither is right or wrong, it's about ensuring you compare like with like.

Perhaps also a mpg fig is more useful than gph, at least for passage-making boats? In which case we get 0.9mpg at sensible cruise (about 80% of max rpm) -twin diesel, 42 foot

On that basis, I'm using 0.3 gall per NM.

From marina to open sea is about 20-25 mins,max speed (MIND YOUR WASH etc etc )is 8knt. So I know that out to sea and return is going to be unusually efficient, or cheap! But once at sea, > tend to think more of revs ag consumption. So I ll know at about 3000revs ,a bit under 30mph, I'll be using 7-8gph, and if I do about 5000revs and 50mph, thats maybe at least 13gph-prob more in fact.. But extremes dont really mean much, because on the whole its the cruising consumption that is of interest, not the average. Thats why the figs on these USA test pages give 3000revs as benchmark for cruising consumption, so like urban cycle or whatever for cars, there is a common standard. Obviously, if your typical boating is different from the chosen benchmark, your gph will be better or worse. So your figure of 4-5gals, is really less to do with the boat/engine and more how you are using the boat. I think why people were surprised on the previous post at your consumption is because it seemed unrealistic compared to their own-ie they run at cruising speed (or higher) more than you. (
