Fuel Connection Threads - Volvo AQD40

I'm helping a friend of mine with the installation of a replacement engine in his boat. The old petrol volvo has been removed and is being replaced with a second hand AQD40a diesel engine.

I'm having trouble finding out what thread the fuel return and feed fittings are to the lift pump and injector pump - they are not bsp or npt fittings. I suspect the lift pump may be M14 x 1.5 but the return thread is a little bigger than this. The pump is a bosch EP/VE 6/11 F and the boat has 3/8 inch copper piping.

If anyone has any ideas what fittings these are i'd be gratefull to know. The 'proper' volvo hoses are very (too!) expensive!

Thanks
Alex

Sorry, I'm not sure what the thread is, but I replaced those hoses on mine. I got them from a company called Hyphose in Farlington (Portsmouth). I took the old ones in and they provided new ones. Do you have the old ones?

Cheers,
Paul

Unfortunately I don't have the old hoses. The genuine volvo ones are pretty expensive so if I knew what the thread was i'd get some made like you've done. I was planning to fit compression fittings on to link into fuel hoses with straight copper connections on the ends if poss.

Thanks for your reply Paul.

No worries. I'm working on the boat again over the next couple of days, and need to get back in the engine room again. I'll see if I can figure any more from looking.

Incidentally the last one I bought was around 70 pounds and that was a few years ago. Are the Volvo ones much different in price?

Cheers,
Paul

The volvo ones are either: Pt No: 843296 £67.23 Pt No: 845646 £88.93 (plus vat)

So it looks like having them made is a little cheaper. I also need some of the fitting parts like the connector block they fit into, but the hose's are the most expensive bit of the missing bits. Hence why im looking to swap to compression fittings and use the yellow hoses ASAP sell at about 20 quid a go.

Hi Alex,
I would guess they're around the same price in that case - bearing in mind I did mine 5 or 6 years ago. Since they are fuel hoses, the spec is quite high - I seem to recall that the feeds were coated in a fire resistance sleeve. The returns were a metal braided hose. I don't know exactly what standards they are supposed to meet, or why they were different though.

Cheers,
Paul

We have the added complication of the boat being on the non-tidal medway, and so the boat will require a boat safety certificate. This requires flexible fuel lines to be marked to ISO7840 standard, which the ASAP supplies lines are, if I can find a way of fitting them. If the volvo ones aren't, the guide reckons they need to be proven to be fit for purpose, which you could argue they are if they are genuine volvo parts.

In the past AGHABRIDGE in Maritime Close on Medway City Estate Rochester 01634 294944 have always been very helpful in finding out threads and stuff and making up various hoses in the past for my old AQD40A.,including the weirdo hydraulic hoses on those ****ty ****ty outdrives I had the misfortune to get tucked up with..
Much cheaper than Vilvo and complete with the required compliance markings on hoses..

Thanks oldgit, will bear them in mind. I might be able to take off the fuel return from the top of the pump and take it to them to match up. If they do the marked hoses then thats all the better.

The outdrive on this one is the plain old 280B, no hydraulic trim to worry about. We have had to replace the transom shield though as there was some corrosion setting in on the lower part. The outdrive remains from the old i nstallation and has always been reliable. The old v8 engine was a dog and was always having minor running issues and its just too big for the river in a 26 foot boat (a fairline).

Is the petrol reduction ratio ok for the diesel ?

You can get various connection in the Volvo parts system to connect your own hoses

Have still got a complete transom assembly in the shed if you need any spares, inc steering fork and helmet, should you need any bits in the future.Would prefer to sell as one lump tho.

Scottie - the reduction ratio on the drive is identical on the v8 and diesel engine - both are 'B' ratio.

Oldgit - thanks for the offer, but we have just fitted a replacement from coastal rides, and transfered the bits from the old shield. If we find we need any spares I'll send you a PM.

Thanks
Alex

Solved!

Problem now solved!

The fuel inlet fitting on the lift pump is M12 x 1.5. The return fitting is M14 x 1.5.

I got a banjo bolt type hose tail for the lift pump and a normal hosetail for the return from an ebay seller which will allow me to plumb it in using standard iso approved fuel hose to hosetails fitted to the racor prefilter and fuel return to the tank.

Total cost for fittings and new lines under £25 and will comply with BSS requirements.

Hopefully will have the engine ready to run in the next few weeks once plumbing and electrics are put together.
