Hi All

Have read a lot about diesel bug etc.... my question is do the magnetic fuel conditioners really work? the theroy is that by sending the fuel through a strong magnetic field the bacteria is broken up to single microbs?

PS. Have sent a PM to Fuelblender without luck.

No, they don't work. Do you also believe in Father Christmas??

If you're worried about diesel bug, dose your tank with Startron.

Thinking along the lines of a circulation system,ie; fuelpump with coalescer element. Something that is independent from the motor. Could be set up on seperate battery and timmer.

No. Magnets do absolutely nothing whatsoever for any type of fuel. The "theory" is plain woo-woo from snake-oil merchants.

Apart from dosing with bug killer, you should also keep your tank clean mechanically. Over the years sludge and grunge will collect in the tank and WILL eventually lead to problems. The only solution is to clean the tank regularly once a year by vacuuming out the bottom using a small pump, taking out some 5 - 10 ltrs or so, less as the tank becomes cleaner. Collect in clear containers so that you can see how dirty it is.

This also removes any water in the bottom which is the cause of many mild steel tank failures (they last forever if you keep the water out)

Of course many manufacturers leave you no access to your tank what so ever and should be taken out and shot!

The best solution to the accumulation of condensation in the tank, is the old fashioned idea of the tank having a little sump to catch water and dirt.

Dear old Westerly fitted a sump, with a plug nut not a tap, so I can only take this out when the tank is empty, so not much use. No access to tank either except through the narrow filler which is at least in the cockpit directly above the tank.

Tank

Plus a drain down there which most do not have. Access hatch would be nice also. But now I am asking to much from a production boat.

read your history about Spitfires supplied to the Russians in WW11

Ah. That old story. It's normally Hurricanes by the way, not Spitifires.

For those of you who don't know, the sellers of these things claim that they were used during the war to enable Merlins to run on low-octane Russian petrol.

It didn't happen. None of the alleged devices have ever turned up. No part number has ever been found for them. No pictures. No installation instructions. No mechanics who can remember seeing, fitting or servicing them. Nothing. It's just another lie by people attempting to sell worthless rubbish to the gullible public.

PBO Green Awards

Would you believe that there is a magnetic fuel conditioner up for an award ?
how can this be if they do not work ?

Don't shoot me down, just skeptic and sitting on the fence.

In the mean time thank's for all your input.

I had a friend who was selling them, all the blurb about turbines, spitfires etc, he was struggling, I bought one, £50 ish! Fool says I, anyway I put it on the fuel line on a petrol frontera, it regularly started doing 5mpg more.
