I left motor boating to join and bought a saily yacht. I'm quite happy with it but I sort of miss the motor boat protection from the great British weather we are having!

Ive seen a Hardy 36 that I quite like. Spec says it will cruise at 15k and max at 18k.

Are these figures realistic?

Also, what sort of fuel will a hardy 36 burn at say 10k and 15k given typical force 3 to 4 sea?

Grateful for any comments please. I'm only speculating at the moment as I have to sell the saily yacht if I'm tempted to come back!

I don't have experience of the boat or the engines albet we have Perkins Sabre 300's in our Broom and I have looked at Hardy's in the past. The speeds sound about right but I would knock a knot off each in reality. As for fuel consumption if you work on 1mpg at cruise you shouldn't be disappointed and might even be pleased that it does a bit better.

We had Sabre 275hp engines in a Broom 37 we owned a few years back and I worked on a fuel consumption of 1 nmpg at 18-20kts like Greg2. IMHO it won't be much different in a Hardy 36 with 225hp engines at planing speed.

Sounds a bit optimistic

As Paul says, I had one of these boats for about 4 years. Mine had the 265 Perkins - we used to go at 2 speeds - 8 knots displacement and 11 knots semi planing. The latter speed was optimal - comfortably "up on the plane" or as near as it goes with an SD without eating fuel. The combination gave us 1.25mpg over the life of the boat. We did some full speed tests immediately after antifouling and got about 19 knots but the fuel just sucks away. I cant imagine the 225 engines being more economical as this is a heavy boat to move around (over 11 tons). If you speak to Hardy, who are wonderful to deal with btw, they would cruise the boat at 15 knots for sure because they are not looking for optimal fuel burn so the boat will certainly do that speed but I reckon you are then around 1mpg. I am more than happy to chat at length about my very positive experiences with the boat if you PM me with your contact details
