It looks as if I need a new engine and Lancing are suggesting that a Ford FSD might be the cheapest option to change to given my current set up. Thing is, from a post I read on here some time ago, I gather FSDs are in transits? Are they in anything else? Also, as I'm going to have to source it myself (cost) how do I know an FSD in particular from any other engine?

I reckon the ford XLD 416/418 range are hard to beat. The 4108 is rated at 47 shp, and the XLD418 at 50 bhp - all over bar the shouting. The Ford engines have very cheap spares, but unlike the Perkins do need a cambelt change every 1000 hours( £12) Easy to do, and worth a new waterpump at the same time - about £25 in a motor factors.
I replaced a 4107 with a XLD418, using a marinising kit, and bell housing, which fitted the Hurth gearbox, so the only real hassle was lining the new engine up, and altering the engine mountings. The whole cost was about £750, including a donor engine from a Fork lift truck, which had done about 1200 hours, but was sound in wind and limb, with good compression on all bores, and no problems with lift or injection pumps. Spares easy as fitted to Ford Fiesta/ Escorts etc so many in car scrap yards

My son in law bought a Sealine285 with Ford Transit diesel engines in ,marinised by Lancing, they start quick dont smoke and are very quiet.does about 22kts,dont know what it did with petrols it had in previously.Have you a van hire company where you live? as most of them use Transits,if you have why not have a word with the mechanic, altho, someone on here is sure to know,it never ceases to surprise me!!!

I have recently installed an FSD into my MB. Got the parts from lancing, sourced the engine from a scrap yard. Engine was from a low mileage '96 transit that had been stolen recovered. Buy yourself a Haines manual for the transit diesel. You will probably need one anyway but inside it gives details of the casting numbers that you will see on the engine block and what derivative of engine that is supposed to be. I have found the engine to be very noisy! Much more than the old 2.5 bmc that was taken out. Might be other problems, not sure yet, still sorting that one out. However it starts before i have even turned the key and no smoke until flat out.

Lancing were very helpful and quick with any orders but not always as switched on as was led to believe. Check what they have sent you is the right piece of kit. I had oil cooler, drive plate and few small bits wrong.

Don't forget the extras in the cost though. Prop? Shaft? Box? Engine bearer mods? Paint???? The list goes on.

PM if you have any questions.
