Frozen gas

I did the same sort of thing when young but with my bladder.
Standard climbers trick. However now we are no longer dominated by camping gaz for small cylinder, other brands can be propane rich so no longer such an issue.

My van was swapped to all calor propane last year as hopefully use in the snowy highlands the coming winter. I keep butane calor regulator plus camping gaz regulator on board but hope never have to use those cylinders

I used to sleep with the cylinder (without regulator) in my sleeping bag which worked OK. We did try a petrol stove once somewhere I have a picture of me standing not so close to it with an 8 foot column of flame coming out of it, we went back to camping gaz and keeping a cylinder in the sleeping back shortly afterwards.

I bought an Indian self pressurising petrol stove in 1981 - it got hot the tank got hot and petrol vapour expanded to blast it it out the nozzle. Worked well but the pressure relief valve on top worried me - if over-pressured a jet of petrol vapour would shoot upwards past the flame.

I have demonstrated it in the garden but present wife rightly deems it too dangerous in a bothy - however it came with excellent lightweight down sleeping bag which I do use

It was a long time ago but it was in a self containing blue metal box with a brass tank and fittings and I think like yours the problem lay in the pressure relief valve.
