From the UK to Hungary on water

One more thing: i do not have proper sailing gear, and i have no idea how should i choose one from the oceans of offers... A used one is enough good for me too.

As I guess it'll be for short-term use the cheapest is what the fishermen wear, which you can buy at co-operatives. It's non-breathable and is not consider a fashion accessory in waterside pubs, but it keeps the water out.

In addition, sometimes professional racers will sell their gear on eBay after a big regatta.

lpdsn: Can you give me a link or picture which I can search for on Ebay or other site?
Something like this:

I've never bought sailing gear from eBay myself, just raced with a few people who have. There was nothing obvious when I just did a quick search but you'd expect that as no major regattas have just finished locally. They tend to come when racing crew are flogging off the gear they've got from a flash boat they've just been racing on.

What gear do you have at the moment? Are you just set up to sail on the Danube & Hungarian lakes, or do you already have gear for sailing in NW European waters?

You could spend more on gear than you have on the boat if you really wanted to. The usual approach is to have multiple layers - you can buy dedicated base layers and mid layers as well as the more obvious oil skins. but generally anything you have for skiing or mountaineering/hiking will work well too, with the exception that there tends to be more wear and tear on the outer surface when sailing, so using an expensive skiing jacket could risk tearing a hole in it or fraying it.

So for example if money were no object you'd buy something like this. https://www.svb24.com/en/musto-musto-mpx-gore-tex-set-black.html Just as the outer layer.

Needless to say the crew on a trawler wouldn't buy that gear and they have to put up with worse weather than the average yachtsman. On the other hand they also put up with getting a bit sweaty and smelly. You could probably find something cheaper than this but it's an example https://www.gaelforcemarine.co.uk/en/SeaStorm-Heavy-Duty-Waterproof-Jacket/m-3097.aspx

By the way, rubber boots like that can be cold so allow for a couple of pairs of socks under them. That said, in the summer I often don't wear my sailing boots and just use deck shoes. It depends when you're going to do the trip.

I have just normal dinghy regatta gear - a neoprene short, a spray top with neopren on the wrist and the neck, and a neoprene deck boot, all from Magic Marine...
When I bought it, some 18 years ago, i sailed just on river, it is rarely used and it is still in very good shape.
Musto is out of the question...
Ergo i need some art rainwear and many layers warm dress under?

Aldi/Lidl sell some suitable stuff occasionally.

I am sure the trip would be great in the summer, if the boat and engine are ok.
You are a brave man to buy a boat, unseen, a thousand miles away in another country.

Unseen is not the right, cos i have a plan for this too...
I follow an english guy named Leo Sampson Goordon on Youtube, who bought an old wooden boat ,Telly Ho in the US. He restore it and as ran out of support, returned to the UK to working by a shipbuilding master
(Drumbeat)
7 miles from my to-be boat!
I picked up contact with him and he is ready to check the boat for me for reasonable price.

A vague rule of thumb I sometimes tell to new crew is to think of it being a season worse at sea than it is on land and another season worse at night. So in the Summer it is Autumn at sea and Winter overnight.

The trouble is that it can vary so much. I've sailed in shorts & T-shirt in the Solent (S England). I've also worn two fleeces and full oilskins in the middle of summer. So you never really know. If you don't have enough clothing to keep warm and are 6 hours from both dawn and the nearest port it's going to feel like a very long night.

Hi Balázs
The Sarum 28 is a nice boat and well built. I did a test sail on one for Sailing Today magazine a few years ago - I'll see if I can find a copy for you, unless you've already seen it.
Good luck with the trip. I've done Le Havre to Sete via the French canals in a 24ft Falmouth Pilot and loved it! Took our time though to enjoy the trip.

I did'nt seen, please send me a copy to bazsimoci et gmail dot com! Thanks!

I realised that 15. March is hungarian national day, we have 4 days off the work, and i plan to visit Cornwall with my wife.
If anybody in the near, it would be nice to meet...

Just to be clear, why we travel to the boat, instead asking Leo.
He sent me an answer, and cos his time is expensive, for 4 hour and the travel cost would charge me 400 USD.
Little more of this amount the two of us can travel straigh to St Mawes, and because we did not have a honeymoon yet, on the way back we look around in London, and if the boat does not correspond to our ideas - at least it will be a pleasant trip...
So if any of you are near to St Mawes on the 17th weekend and want to help to check the boat, i would be very grateful for it!

Hi guys!
We was in the UK to see the Sarum 28, it was a huge disappointment...
The broker was a very kind people, but the boat was a mess, leaky windows and hatch, mold everywhere, smells from diesel- and at the end: electrolitic corrosion on the bilge! My wife said, if its for free we will not buy it either...
After 15 minutes on the boat we decided to leave the yard, then i conversated with the broker in his house about my plans, and we started to Penzance to see an other boat- a Seawolf 26. This boat was in a mint condition, the owner is very kind, and i really liked the Seawolf. But the asking price is higher, 9000 pounds, what is momently out from my budget...
Meanwhile i started a course at the RYA, the SRC course what I feel like I need to do it.
I still continue a search for a suitable boat, i found a Cobra 850 for 7250Ł as asking price.

Hi! I search the owner of the boat Seawolf 30, named Mistral, lying in Haslar Marina in Gosport. If you know the owner please give me a contact or give my email him! bazsimoci@gmail.com
Many thanks!
Balázs from Hungary
