Half way to the Azores, 1000 miles from anywhere, we came across a dismasted and disabled yacht. The singlehanded skipper asked if he could hitch a ride the rest of the way and we were, of course, happy to agree. We signed on our third crew member, Richard, after transferring him and some of his belongings across to Spirit of Penmar in his liferaft. We knew it was Fate when we unpacked a brand new jar of marmalade from his bags; we'd just that morning used the very last of ours and thrown the empty jar overboard, bemoaning its demise! Joking aside, it was sad to see a yacht abandoned and scuttled, but we are so glad that Richard is safe and well and is now on his way back to the UK by air.
