Holiday Break next week, but what a dilemma....
planning to anchor overnight Thursday in the Roach and then up to Brightlingsea on Friday....
This is our first venture out of the Crouch,(you will recall very novice Wife). Does this count as 'Starting a voyage on a Friday' especially Friday the 13th:eek:

Tongue in cheek here really;), but how dow others feel about nautical superstitions?

Paint your boat green, take a rabbit and a vicar and whistle a tune all day, just to be on the safe side.:D

As a rule the date matters not to us. We set off to cross the nth sea on fri 13th, this year we launched on Fri 13th apr and sold the boat 2 wks later!
I spend more time worrying about weather and planning for the passage than the date. However I know plenty of folk who give Fri 13th a wide berth but they don't sail!!!
Enjoy and embrace the day!

I fully intend to, I'll just have to make sure we head North on a rising tide.....

SWMBO once booked a package holiday to Crete. She plumped for the week that was much cheaper than all the others for no apparent reason. In fact, the flight was on Friday the 13th and the great unwashed refused to fly. So superstitions can work in your favour.

Well I'm off on a non-stop passage from Ipswich Haven to Portsmouth and planning to leave at about 23:00 on Friday 13th.

Perhaps I will be a suitable test case?

Or maybe I should leave it an hour or so...

If you are heading north on a rising tide, you will abe able to put that down to Fri 13th...

On any other day the tide rises to the south and falls towards the north.....

I think I understood that:confused:

Well we're here anchored in Devils Reach on the Roach listening to the rain, but also watching the seals playing round the boat ..... Fantastic. Raised our spirits no end!:)

So far so good!
One root canal filling.:(
20 knots of wind on the nose with wind against tide from the Deben to Landguard.
SYH no space.
Meeting a mate there for a weekends sailing in the morning.
Now on a swinger off SYH:rolleyes:

Friday 13th - report back on results

In the interests of 'science' I thought I'd let you know how we got on.

1) Crew arrived at about 23:00. Boat was already for the off, but we then had to wait nearly an hour for the lock. The Keeper was off doing Pilot duties apparently. Actually departed at 23:50.

2) Torrential rain and thunder off Long Sand Head. Autohelm packed up at this point so no more hiding under the sprayhood. Not nice.

3) Inexplicably, the working genoa sheet got caught round the prop off the Thanet wind farm. We found ourselves drifting down on the turbines with no engine or sails for a short while! Also not nice.

All sorted after a few minutes thanks to the rope cutter on the prop and a jury rigged sheet.

4) More torrential rain and very poor viz off Dover. Thank goodness for AIS! An essential tool for ferry dodging in my book.

5) Wind on the nose all the way along the Channel.

6) Couldn't get onto the Gosport Ferry to catch the train home because about 10,000 people had turned up to see the Olympic Torch.

Of course I'm not superstitious - but even so ...

Crouch to B'Sea

Well, we made it to Brightlingsea, via the Whitaker and the Spitway. The crossing from Wallet Spitway to Inner Bench (on a rising tide) was a bit hairy for my Good Lady, but I suspect she sort of enjoyed it;) We arrived too early for the Marina sill and stooged around until the HM assured us there was plenty of water. Alongside 1730 on Friday (13th)

I made the mistake of turning towards Swin Spitway too early and found myself with not much depth at all , turned East for a bit to find more water.

Two nights in B'Sea Marina. I can see why it receives such bad press here! The all day (and night) party on Saturday in one of the flats didn't help :(

A classic comment during the crossing...
"How much water have we got?" (expecting "about 4 metres" in reply)
"I think we've got one of those 5 litre bottles in the front somewhere"

:D:DI laughed:D:D

Friday the 13th paaah
