"TV supremo Barbara Walters did a report on gender changes in Kabul, the Afghanistan capital, contrasting womens’ role in society before the conflict, when they traditionally walked 10 paces behind their menfolk. Now, she notices, the men walk 10 paces behind their wives. She asked an Afghani woman: “Can you tell the free world just what enabled women to achieve this reversal of roles?’’ “Land mines,’’ said the woman."
